Cheapest mooring in South England?

Thank you Chinita and James for your replies. I'll have a look to see the prices.
But I don't think I'll find something like I read on this forum a while ago, about a guy who said he pays for his mooring £80 a year. Might be true? I have my doubts....

As pointed out, plenty of clubs around in the Thames (Erith, Greenwich, Thurrock, Gravesend) and the Medway. And a friendly club is a good place to start.

One important point is what sort of keel your boat will have. A fin keeler, and you have to be looking at a deep water mooring (or a very protected mud berth in some places). With bilge or lifting keel that can take the ground, you have the option of a half-tide mooring. Cheaper and more likely to be available.

At Gravesend Sailing Club, I'm pretty sure we've got space for more half tide moorings - £304 per year (plus membership of course; and I think there's a one-off mooring allocation fee if I recall correctly). PM me if interested, I'll put you in touch with the moorings people & make sure you're given a warm welcome.

But if you're 10 mins from Erith, deffo go there if they have space (don't tell my commodore I said that!).

There you go ;) http://www.medwaycruisingclub.org.uk/mooring.html

As ever, not somewhere I have any first hand experience of so do some research on it if you're interested.
I don't know if they have any secure parking for example, it might be worth finding out, I grew up in Gillingham...

A letter in the current Cruising Association magazine suggest that moorings are available at Woodbridge for £45 pa. An article in the same edition suggests ways of acquiring a 'good-enough' small yacht for around £1000, plus your own elbow grease.

45 quid is unbelievable. But must be true as long is written in that magazine. And probably I can find another "Woodbridge" close to Erith if I "dig" enough, isn't it...? Who said that sailing is an expensive passion? If you can find mooring for 45 quid/year and you can buy a boat with less than 1000 pounds....! What can you ask for more?:encouragement:

Of course, Medway Cruising Club, another place with great prices.
How can other clubs can ask for exorbitant money and why people pay such prices?...

as mentioned its the PLA that set most of the prices. theres a small percentage to cover maintenance costs of the trot

at erith yacht club we maintain and check the trots twice a year, all voluntary and the cost in the mooring pays for the fuel, chains, buoys, parking space for the boat on the fill and tea and biscuits.

there are council owned moorings at greenhithe pub pier, i once tied up my seawych to a buoy there and the buoy vanished and my boat was adrift luckily the wind and tide pushed it onto the slipway. wouldnt want my fin keel intro 22 going adrift though

i expect cheaper moorings are less maintained and doesnt include other things.

im not in charge of the available spaces. also depends on what trot you need as depends on the draft of the yacht and length (max length is 39ft i believe at eyc)

but the last two years there have been spaces from what i can see on each trot

If available, pop down to Greenwich Yacht Club this Sunday 15th - there's a cruiser race on so there'll be people around. I think the deep-water moorings are on a waiting list but half-tide ones may be available, and at a lower price (can't remember exactly what but I pay about £65 per month for membership and deep-water mooring). Come and check us out :) The sailing from Greenwich is surprisingly good.

Thank you for invitation. I'll certainly be there. I've promised myself since this passion wrapped my mind, not to miss any event available and that I can attend. So, I'll be around with my wife. I hope that I don't need a special introduction to visit your club in days like this.

Hi Bare Hooks.
Nice to see KFBC getting a mention, used to keep a Princess 33 there a few years ago.
A great little club. Pass by every now and then on way to Faversham or Conyer.

It is one right here in Erith, 10 min walk from where I live, I was very excited going there but became very sad hearing that everything is taken there. On a first search, nearby ,on the web I've found only very expensive ones.
They ask for more than a thousand a year.:(
I'm really surprised that you say all the moorings at Erith YC are spoken for. Whenever I've gone past there, loads of them have been unused.

That's a great response, and puts some faith back into the 'club mentality'. Had I lived anywhere close to you, I'd have been down at the weekend buying beers for Mooring Officers.... :)
