cheaper large instrument displays - mast mount

7x4 inches seems a bit on the big side... I only have a 33footer, this might be a bit monstrous on the mast. Could we go a bit smaller?
Single color backlight would be sufficient, I think.
As to the data, I would like to display speed

As to the data, I would like to display speed through water (rather than SOG), magnetic heading and apparent wind angle (AWA), all via NMEA 1803. If I may tell my wishes :)

Apparent Wind Speed/Angle
True Wind Speed/Angle
True Wind Direction
VMG to wind
Heading
Boatspeed
Speed Over Ground
Course Over Ground
Lat/Long
VMG to Waypoint
Distance/Bearing to Waypoint
Turn to Waypoint
Cross Track Error
TTG
Depth
Performance Data (using Proprietary NMEA Sentences from Tacktick, b&g, silva, nke)

Why do you want these displayed on the mast? - I'm interested...

I would suggest that we should aim for any numerical values to be displayed in 3 digits (including a decimal point somewhere in there)

I don't really...briefly looking at specs that others use...(opened a ray marine st60 graphic manual)

Looked at what my current tactick maxi display shows...I have put them in the post above taking out the ones that have never been used/hidden

The rest do get used between racing and cruising

Numbers

Might be useful to get an idea of how many units (ie interested individuals) we are talking about?

How about getting getting some figures of whose in?

A pole might help......... Somebody must know how to do that - I don't ...!

I took the 7x4 " display from the Tacktick/b&g stable....they use a max size of 50mm or thereabouts for the digits...I was trusting that they have done a little research on what works...quite happy to go smaller as it reduces costs..how about 6 x 3 (I'm only 30ft btw) I have 2 Tacktick maxi displays, a t210 and a t215 they seem to be the right size and don't look ridiculous. The Tacktick display including housing is 6,25" x 4.5"

Maybe 6 x 4 would be a good compromise???

This would maybe allow the height for a 2 sets of data on 1 display

Last time I did this I used a monochrome transflective LCD 128x64 graphic display from RS. A similar display that they do now is part number 532-7221. These are easy to drive from a software point of view, and also importantly are easy to connect to. Some of the connectors on more complex displays are absolutely tiny and only come in surface mount form. This means immediately you are having to get a PCB made even for a prototype. There's a big advantage in one with a SIL type connector than even I can solder to.

I am prepared to advise on this project and submit my existing designs and source, but I don't really want one of these displays on my boat, and the £200 estimated price is way out of my budget for electronic tinkering for me. My YAPPs usually cost £20 at most.

I'll dig out my old project when I get home and see if it still works. If it does I'll post a picture. You can have all the old source, which contains the NMEA decoding, font and graphics routines.

Hi Angus...

It seem the screen is the expensive part...if we found a much cheaper screen...I.e smaller would it be better...I don't know what work is involved In changing to a larger screen size at a later stage...I guess a lot?

I am on a real learning curve on lcd's here....think I am getting somewhere

I reckon we can get nearer and nearer to the £20 range :-)

I have been following this thread with interest, and am very impressed by the know how shown so far, I have very little electronics experience, Is this going to be comapatable with most common systems to recieve depth etc? You talk about TWA and AWA, what sort of proccessor is driving those calcs.
I am very interested as I am currently researching building my own boat, a 27ish ft race yacht and am doing all of the research for it at the moment to make sure I can afford to do it, the hull is the cheap bit and I dont want to build a **** boat because I cant afford decent components.
As said before what was blowing my mind was the cost of the electronics. they are looking likley to cost me more than the hull build costs. as it is only a 27ft boat I will probably just go with a Pro start and a tacktick wind angle but would love to get something proper sorted out on it and this sounds like it could be just the ticket!

From what i have seen digit size would be based on the what the programmed layout/size is. If we had no title then i guess the digits would be 4", with a smaller title maybe 3". as it is an LCD i guess we could then have 2 lines of data, each with a title and a corresponding digit size reduction

Are my assmptions correct?
