Charts - Solent how old is too old ?

Actually the Solent is a unique tidal area - not least that the split tide is part of the reason for the double S'oton tide ...

Being a large body of water -at such as 3hrs after HW Ports stream divides E and W ....

But your picture shows the main stream of the ebb, and even then what flow there is is all west bound. The main flood (as you earlier stated) is all east bound. Why are you struggling with the fact that as far as buoyage is concerned it is treated as two rivers ?

Thats a pretty short lived thing. It very quickly starts thundering westward.

Oh - I'm well aware of that .... spent nigh on 50+yrs boating all parts of Solent and surroundings. Also know how to avoid the worst streams in that western part ...

My point was only that the bouyage was based on Admiralty Based decision on Main Stream of Flood .... not some fanciful two rivers ....

I don't think the buoyage has got much to do with tides. It just follows the convention of buoyage everywhere else in the known world. There are 2 ways in, and that's it. One considerably more useful than the other for vessels of any size of course, but we still met a small tanker right over on the Yarmouth side on Saturday, maybe he was confused, they read this thread perhaps.

I give up !

Have you never been north of Orford Ness! North of Orford Ness the lateral buoyage follows the main stream of the Ebb; south it follows the main stream of the Flood!

OK so the waters and indeed seabed of the Solent area are generally quite stable, so the only thing that really changes is the occasional movement to a mark, or removal / addition of a new one.

Annoyingly I have lost my Admiralty Chart Pack SC5600, but can buy either a used 16th edition for £27 or a brand new 19th edition for £45.

Not sure what edition I have mislaid but likely had those ~ 10 or more years (think they came with the boat before last).

What to do ?
I have ordered the NV 3 Chart pack / book for the Solent area. I will let you know what its like when I have had a look at it. If its good then I expect I will also order the NV2 pack too.

The NV 3 Chart book arrived today.

Why did someone not think of this before ?

It is simply brilliant - no shuffling charts into the required order, simply a post it note to flag the pages required on your trip.

Tidy and compact, but very clear and very well written.

And it does include Cowes breakwater !

When I bought my first yacht in the 70s the charts on board still showed the minefields off the Belgian coast.
I thought an update was due.
