Chartplotter - Buying in the US?

Re: Yes, but it\'s not worth it...

Eamonn,

Am sorry about that I must have missed you post.
The SRP is £189 inc.
Average price is about £169.95, best I found from a quick google is £164.95.

Do you need the headset/speaker mic socker or the Licenced PMR channels?

If not then the HX260 is worth a look at.

Best regards

Sounds good...

That sounds good, and I think we can be confident that our hypothetical American sailor would be well looked after by the UK branch of Standard Horizon. But what if I (as a UK citizen) buy a Standard Horizon plotter in the US and it fails within the warranty period? Is it likely that I'd receive the same level of service? Or would the US and UK branches of Standard Horizon conspire to penalise me for having bought my plotter, openly and legally, in the US? I know it's a theoretical question, but it really is important to buyers to know how they're likely to be treated.

Even cheaper...

Dave

now you have me confused and more than a little interested!

absolutley agree with [ QUOTE ]
however the DSC interconnect with GPS would be peace of mind and it would have been nice to have more customer support rather than being fobbed off.

[/ QUOTE ] but are you suggesting that you are not getting an NMEA message being sent?

I am sure it was a Silve that proved the only total failure of the combined efforts on here to get it linked to a GPS unit - Navman from memory.

Only other recurrent points were (1) not connecting NMEA-ve direct to the other units earth if it didn't have a dedicated -ve and (2) expecting some VHF units to show the position on screen when you haven;t entered an MMSI number in them leading you to believe they aren't connected.

Re: Now even cheaper...

The unit from Thiecom is unlikely to be a UK model so will not have M1 (37a) and M2 (P4).
If you could get a dealer to add them the average programming charge is £20-£25 + vat.
The better to buy from Dorset or JG as these will def come with those channels.

Overheads must be cheaper in their parts of the UK hence the lower price /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Also as you see from the earlier post that Manufacturers can sometimes take a parochial or protective posture with their dealer networks insisting that warranties are honoured 'in region'. You are probably right with some dealers who honour warranties irrespective of where purchased.

Dave

With all due respect I am sure you would be over the moon with this posture if you were one of those protected dealers?

Re: Yes, but it\'s not worth it...

Had an interesting chat with a dealer yesterday so if you are considering Navman maybe worth a look at Norstar or is it Northstar.

Same kit cheaper pricing.

In the words of that famous shop........
"every little helps"

All the best
