I've just bought a Standard Horizon 180 chartplotter and a NASA AIS engine, and am having trouble understanding the fairly sparse instruction on the NMEA connections. Advice would be much appreciated!

It's a pretty fine mess of cables !!

Are you mounting your CP180 permanently or removing it when you're not aboard?

Ours is on a temporary fixing above the companion way (on velcro) so I need to remove the cable as well ... I've put a 9pin serial connector on the end of the CP180 loom, but will be changing it for an RJ45 when I get time.

The actual connections are quite simple:

AIS Engine requires power, antenna and has a serial connector for the 38400 output. You do not need to feed the GPS position into the engine if you are just feeding the CP180.

The CP180 requires power, GPS (if you've got the external mushroom one) and can feed the AIS data in on either of the 2 NMEA input ports.

Page 15 on the CP180 manual gives you the colours - we've used BLUE for the AIS engine, connecting Green to 0V (ground)
