I've never tried it before and was thinking about it for next summer. Any recomendations or otherwise would be gratefully received. How about private charter? Has anyone tried this and if so how do you go about contacting people with boats in the Med who may be interested?

have been with Sailing Holidays for last 2 years in the ionian, first on a 361 and this year on a 331. both brand spanking, cannot praise them too much. everything was as promised kids, 12 & 13 couldnt believe it, all the boats in school holiday time have kids on board to join up with at each stop and leave ma & pa to enjoy socialising etc. if you are experienced you are not nannied and if you are not they look after you.
they are the best value of them all believe me.
only reason not going this year is that i have bought my own 351.

Colin welcome to the forum

your profile does not say what your experience is so forgive me if i go over stuff you know
1st there are lots of threads on this so do a search and it will bring stuff up

1st decide where you want to go

Greece and turkey is home to all the flots, if you want to do that route . lots of boats. lots of islands. ionian no wind, to dodecanses good breeze, however flights can be limited and food not to everyone's taste

balearics ace, nice food nice bays good wind easy flights but need to book early.
s france donot know but know sardinia and corsica can be v windy

you can do the standard all inc charter flights etc. with sunsail neilsen templecraft ionian et al they are all in pbo

or you can go indy
book own flights and do a latesail.com. they will do 3 months to last minute so you can book flights then boat. there are always loads of boats main season MAY to Sept.

i have done a lot of chartering and have found over the years that whereas the big operators have lots of presence even the small guys can arrange to fix stuff if it goes wrong. late sail is ace cos you can book cheap flights in advance then boat quite late and save enough for another trip later in the year. no ties just happy customer.

pm if you want more info as i have about 16 med charters under me belt. so cannot put it all down here

If it F***s Flies or Floats. Rent it. For god's sake don't marry it.

have to say never had an add to be sold to me from sunsail
everything is inlcuded
other than provisioning

If it F***s Flies or Floats. Rent it. For god's sake don't marry it.

Went with Sailing Holidays a couple of years ago in the Ionian. At that time they had a fleet of Jags, very old, very wet and tired. The crew were also very jaded at the end of the season and made some silly and potentially dangerous errors. I don't know if these boats are still in the fleet.

The weather in the Ionian (late season) was also very mixed there were only two wind speeds zero and squally 6/7.

Still that said it didn't stop us having a really good holiday!

times change, the "tired old jags" are still there updated every season and were fully booked this august past.
the fleet of brand new 361s which we went on last year were still looking brand new,
the the fleet of brand new 331s were brand new and we enjoyed ours very much.
they have ordered a pile of new boats for next year.
have no connection with sailing holidays, just a very satisfied customer

I am not suprised they were fully booked, they were great value for money, bit just kept dropping off that was all.
How were your lead crew?
