Has anyone here chartered in Croatia before?

I have booked a yacht for 7 days from Trogir, near Split, this summer. I know, a busman's holiday - but it should be a great chance to sail with the family and hopefully inspire the kids! I am under no illusion that my crew will be a lot my demanding than my usual crew...

I have sailed in Croatia before, but only either to start or finish a yacht delivery. Presumably, on charter, we will be doing things like stopping at night!

Can you recommend some good places to visit? What are your top tops? If you've done something similar before, what route did you take?

Many thanks!

Following this with interest, we're doing the same this year starting in June, Trogir start too. Have been before, had three separate weeks there. The area is a jewel, hundreds of bays and islands to explore and a good selection of decent marinas and town quays too. Suggest you get a cruising guide and read.

Top tip: Avoid the ACI marina at Palmizana at peak season....!

A few of my favourites would be Vis - either Komiza or Kut in the main Vis bay. Palmizana I would avoid nowadays as it gets very crowded, although Menghellos restaurant is still very nice. On Solta - Stomorska is a pretty little harbour, and handy for refuelling at Rogac before you give the boat back. Sesula at the other end is also nice. On Hvar - Starigrad and Vrboska are very pretty. On the mainland, Primosten, Skradin (Krka waterfalls) are worth a look. Further afield Kornati , Lastovo, Korcula and Miljet are fabulous, but you would need a 2 week charter to get there and back.
As a general comment, the ACI marinas are expensive and lack character - town quays generally a better option. Quite a few of the anchorages are now full of mooring buoys - eg Palmizana. It’s changed a lot over the 15 years or so I’ve been going but it still keeps me coming back - enjoy!

You will most certainly love it as Croatia is a beautiful place however can be very busy and crowded in the summer. Very expensive too. It is not unheard of people finding it difficult to get a place in a marina even early in the afternoon. ACI has a booking facility on their website though. The way to do it I think is to get a bigger boat with big water tanks and spend more time at anchor exploring smaller islands/harbours away from the main routes. Many small Konobas there were you can moor for free if you eat there and food is amazing. But have to arrive early. For both kids and adults it is important to have a good quality swim shoes that would protect you from sea urchins - very nasty creatures. I know people who did Split - Dubrovnik and back in one week but it is probably a bit too extreme for kids. Korcula (Vela Luka, westerly end) and Peljesac should be doable though. Both worth a visit. And Ajvar and Karlovačko beer !

Did a weeks charter in Sept 2018 out of ACI Split. Split old town is well worth seeing if you get the chance. We enjoyed Milna on Brac - there is a small marina on left just before the town. Sesula on Solta was a good stop over too if you can find a mooring.

Unfortunately got stuck in Palmizana for 2 nights due to very strong winds. Great if you want to visit Hvar (via ferry) and exploring the island but it is probably the most expensive marina in Croatia.

Also sailed into Hvar in early May 2019 on a delivery and we managed to get a night on the town quay in Hvar - a little bumpy. As said Korkula is fabulous but just a little far on a one week charter.

It's a great area. Enjoy.

I recall the Skradin falls were a break from all the sailing stuff . We went many years ago and even then the marina prices seemed high but I recall one did offer a swimming pool and great showers.Have visited Trogir once by boat -plenty of bars and a town quay to moor on if you don’t mind the tourist grockles gawping as you eat dinner in the cockpit . The marina is fine across the bridge but better if you have the tender to commute across provided not to much imbibing at town quay bars. Worth spending an afternoon wandering around Trogir .

There are so many options there but this was one of our favourites when introducing new poeple to Croatia. Drvenik Veli - beautiful overnight anchorage Krknasje a couple of hours from Trogir. Then down to harbour wall at Milna for bars and basic local cuisine, through the Gates of Split to Jelsa - early start so you get to harbour wall before 1pm to nab a spot when someone leaves, fantastic town then a short hop to gorgeous Pokrovenik anchorage for a days swim and overnight. Finally to Korcula for picture postcard setting and a good marina - again you need to be early so it’s a longish motor from Pokrovenik. Food is spectacular there. We would often spend a few nights at anchor by the monastery to get over the nights in town. Then it’s a long day sail back to Trogir, maybe revisiting Krknasja for a final night.

I have chartered out of Trogir and also Split over the last three years. Loads of fantastic places to visit or anchor. Korcula, Milna, Vis and many others. The marina staff were always helpful in berthing and facilities are excellent.

We've just come back from our Trogir-based charter, had a great week again. Some of the places we visited and thought worth recommending, in no particular order:

Milna (ACI Marina or Marina Vlaska)
Vrboska (ACI Marina or town quay)
Uvala Lucice (superb overnight stop on buoy)
Maslinica (ideally inside the harbour not on the outer wall)
Bobovisca (mooring buoys or the small town quay opposite the bar)
