I am looking to upgrade from my old monochrome Garmin GPS Map 180 to another chart plotter with a colour screen and low power usage. Any suggestions? Thanks. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Don't know if you are looking for a handheld - but this months PBO have a good reveiw article on handheld colour plotters.

BTW - if you are looking for a buyer for your old Map 180, PM me.

A navman 5500 is a great plotter (I have one) The screen is clear and the menu system very logical and user friendly. However, if you have the space and the cash, go for its larger brother the 5600 as it makes planning a bit easier.

lowrance 3300 is pretty good, easy to use, fine in sunlight . think they are also bringing out an even better screen, though in UK not sure we have all that florida sunshine to merit it!

The Raymarine RL70CRCs that are now being sold at sub-£800, because they are being phased out, are an absolute bargain imho. But you have to move fast

CMap cartography. and Raymarine's usual brilliantly intuitive user interface

I would also endorse the Navman. We use a 5500i with integral GPS in the cockpit, it is fully waterproof and works fine in the sun. C-Map which Navman use IMO are the best chart cartridges and at least you will not have the uncertainty of Garmin compatible cartridges that ONLY work with Garmin. I believe they changed the format once already and rendered a whole lot of their plotters obsolete?

Raymarine...

A little while ago, I'd have said get a Navman 5600 - I've used one for a couple of seasons and it was just so easy and intuitive to use, has a daylight viewable screen and is fully waterproof.

But now, I'd suggest looking at Raymarine. The C70 and the RL70CRC are similarly priced right now, at around £800, and both have 640x480 screens (compared with the Navman's 320x234). Both have the ability to add a radar scanner at some point in the future. The RL70CRC is imminently obsolete, but that doesn't stop it working well. You mentioned low power usage, and the C70 only uses 9watts. The C70 uses Navionics charts; the RL70CRC uses C-Map charts - both these formats are now similarly priced at much more attractive levels. I've just fitted a C-series and so far I'm very pleased with it.

Re: Raymarine...

You forget to add that although the RL70CRC is almost obsolete, it is multi-station through the excellent hsb2 system, the C70 is single station only.

Very true...

I assumed, perhaps wrongly, that multi-station use might not be a requirement. If it is, the RL70CRC makes a lot more sense than forking out an extra £1000 to get the new E-series! Now that's creative pricing.
