charging regulator

I have been reading the thread, and I have the same problem with my 1984 Merc 50HP outboard. Determined the rectifier was bad, bought a new one, installed it and the battery is charging upwards of 16.5 v with a charge current of 6 to 8 amps. Is there an after market regulator available? I can make one if I had a circuit diagram.
Thanks,
Bill

The battery voltage is around 12 volts when the motor is not running. As I increase the RPM, the voltage rises slowly to 16.5. I assume the high voltage from the rectifier is causing the battery to form gas around the plates and the terminal voltage then rises. I want to build or buy a regulator to correct this problem.

If the battery is at 12 volt with no load, then as a guide devide capacity by charge rate, and this should be approximatley the time it takes to get the battery to 16 volt.
If it is taking you say 15 / 30 minutes to reach 16 volt, you have a dead battery that is sulphated and you are getting surface charge. In which case you may find the charging ok, or you do not get over charge in normal use.
