Charge Laptop directly with DC?

There is zero chance your MacBook needs 140W - that will give you faster charging, but my MacBook charges from a 12v Belkin USB-C charger in 2 or 3 hours, even when in use.
Absolutely, I have the base model MacBook M4 pro 16 which comes with a 140W charger but it's quite happy running off my phone's 15w charger without dropping battery level while surfing or doing WP work.
My new monitor has a 60W USB-C PD which will run it indefinitely for anything

Can't find the actual one but years now laptop on board has been running off a DC DC boost converter off amazon or ebay, had to replace last year after maybe half a decade always on. Some laptops (dell, HP? ) have a centre pin which either needs a voltage from a resistor network or a little I2C chip in the charger which the laptop needs to talk to. Get on an Ai to reasearch if you have a centre pin.

Another data point, backing up yours -- my HP Spectre X360 with i7 Intel evo and nvidia graphics card, came with a 150 watt charger and yet will run and charge (very slowly, but charge) from my 45 watt PD phone charger.

But the OP has a hot gaming computer so will surely need more power than that.

I don't game, but I find the laptop helps with my work with virtual machine set ups and ram heavy processes.

All part of my profession
Sure, that kind of power may be needed for things other than gaming. Heavy video editing, giant spreadsheets, CAD, whatever. Not up to us to second guess your needs.

I use a laptop with i7, 32GB of RAM, and separate graphics, for my work, and wouldn't want to do it with less power.

But I don't use the same machine for boat tasks and work tasks. The boat computer is a mini pc which runs Linux and needs single digits of watts of power. This is the one which runs 24/7 when I'm on board. My work computer is turned on only when I'm doing actual work.

Which is sensible. For me personally, I either work or study on the laptop, or I am trying to stay away from screens entirely. So I don't really have a lot of "off time" from work on the laptop, in fact, the less, the better for my mental health. Those little light rectangles can become quite addictive.

I run a multi-national business and have to take my Notebook PC with me wherever - boat .. holiday .. any travel in fact as its a 24/7 matter.

I make do with a standard PC bought from local shop ... in fact I'm typing on it now .. Lenovo Ideapad 3 ... the other I use is an Acer Core i5 machine ..

I try to avoid heavy apps ... even though I do video editing on these two and the other Lenovo I have on my desk - a B50 .. but what 'processor' - the label is worn and cannot be read ...

Why three on the desk ? Back-up and also allows me to have various running and working while also conferencing etc.

But boat / travel - then only one goes with me.

M1 MacBook Pro. USB c pd happily charges it so I don’t need to take anything but a cable when I go to the boat. Same for my iPad and phone. I think my pd is 45w.

Buy good beer, not the stuff that is only drinkable when chilled to take away the taste.
That's funny because I keep saying that to people: Alcohol tastes better at room temperature.

But can I be frank? I drink beer as an alcoholic refreshment, not because I like the taste so ultra much. It's okay, I don't hate it, but it's not whisky or anything. So yes, beer and meat has to be cooled. Fridge stays, I live on the boat so I won't do without. Just because it costs a lot, doesn't mean i have to cut it. Sometimes you have to work around the problem and find a solution.

And for other comments: My laptop doesn't charge with usb. I looked at that before :(
I will sleep on it. Because if it doesn't help reduce costs as much as I thought it would, then I don't see the point in building it?

Unless you have a fancy 12v power supply that will pump the voltage USB-PD is limited to 27W on a 12V system (9V at 3A) is the maximum supported power without upping voltage. The expensive power supplies with a brick like the Belkin or Lenovo can up voltage for additional power but almost no USB sockets for install on a boat go over 27W per port for this reason.
MacBooks and most Surface laptops are fine with this and consume about 13W in use but heavy usage such as video production will up that on any device.

I'd be inclined to fit an inverter, dedicated to the laptop and turn it off when not needed.

I mean, I tried to find one but was not successful. Not for the required output.

Laptop's an Asus Tuf A15

I have found this plug, and I was thinking of a DC-DC inverter like this:
Quick moment on an ai suggests you have a centre pin as well so just some power very likely won't work. Might be easiest with a cheap little inverter which will draw power just being turned on if you can live with that. You'll get lots of useful info and links on Ai like perplexity.ai

You seem fixated on AI.

I just recently bought an inverter, but I can use that for other things like power tools etc if necessary. Just thinking about how to reduce consumption because as much as I'd like 3k solar, I don't have the room on my itty, bitty boat.

AI is the new google, and it gives more direct answers. It's not exactly accurate, just roleplaying, but it's immensly good at feeling like a real person. Google is difficult because you got to check all the sources and read articles etc...

I don't make a point for AI btw, just explaining.
Sad innit...seems that's the way to be trendy...I wonder who is going to be responsible for the wrong Intel....
No one, but people rely way too heavily on ai. Especially stuff like chatgpt. As I said already; It's essentially just roleplaying, which it does good, but it's not exactly knowledgable. It's like Eddie Redmayne playing Stephen Hawkings. He may do so convincingly, but I am sure the movie, as all movies do, did get many things wrong and real scientists roll their eyes.

It’s orders of magnitude more important to do those things with AI, it literally makes things up. For instance it would mention that central pin just because many conversations do, it has no clue about specific model details.
