I shall be changing the oil in my Volvo diesel when winterising next month. Is there any need also to change the oil filter? I plan to have a full service in the Spring immediately after relaunch.
Change the filter now. Your going to loose some oil if you do it in the spring anyway. What will you gain by not changing the filter now. The filter will hold some old oil in it until the spring, along with any crud that its collected. Change it now and its one less job to do later.
OK, to hell with it. Unbolt it and we'll use it as an anchor!
After putting in the new oil I presume you will be running the engine to circulate it. This will also circulate the dirty oil from the filter, together with its acids and other contaminants. Change the filter now and you won't need to change it in the spring.
A tip when changinging the filter - wrap a strong plastic bag over the filter while you unscrew it to catch all the oil which will inevitable dribble out.
