So my little boat I had for 4 short months is being sold, ive agreed a price and looking forward to driving my Searay 230 in a couple of weeks time. However I don't like the name given to the boat, and want to change it, I understand its meant to be bad luck, and I don't need that , not on a boat, so is there of way of giving her a new name that will bring me good luck lol!......How do people get round it, or don't they rename the boat at all ? thanks

The only way to change your luck is to buy copious beers for all your mates. You need to get them that drunk that there is no chance they will remember the origin name. PM me the time and date of the piss up, please.

Never change the name of a boat. Not only is it bad luck but it also destroys a lot of the History surrounding the boat...... Dont do it leave it as it is

Bit of a touchy subject for us at the moment. SWMBO really doesn’t like the name of our boat (had it since July) and to be fair, when I first saw it I didn't like it either. Now that I now what is behind it and given that it has always had the same name and is Part 1 registered it has grown on me. I think it is part of the boats history so would like to keep it but SWMBO is not in the same place. Current strategy has been to transfer the registration to our names and try to avoid the subject coming up.........not sure if it will prove successful! ?

Thats what a service history is for. You only destroy it if you lose it!

Saying that I haven't renamed a boat after the bad luck with first boat after changing name! Then again it was in a state when bought.

Current boat was renamed before me. The service history shows the change. However, previous owner did fall off the boat and broke his leg. Mmm ?

Make whatever deductions u want!

Another piece of folklore to ward off bad luck is to put a silver sixpence under the mast. If you don`t have a mast the radar arch should suffice. We have done that twice having purchased boats called Scallywags and Loony Lu.:( It didn`t have any impact on the price or saleability when we sold the former Scallywags.
