Hi All
Is there any reason why I cant change the name of the boat I have recently bought. The boat was Part 1 registered when new (in 1990) but this lapsed back at the beginning of 2003. Is there anything else involved, I mean do I have to inform anyone
Thanks

It is supposed to be unlucky .I don't hold to superstition, however I had a run of very bad luck and an expensive year after changing the name of my current boat , not so sure I will be so keen to change the name of any future boat!!!!

Inform marina where boat is kept? Insurers or anyone with a financial interest at all. Radio license people and any other authority that have the boat listed by previous name.

Yep, it's supposed to be the harbinger of doom and gloom to change the lady's name - a load of tosh really just as you should not whistle on board - yet most militaries use the ships pipe and other whistling sounds - I do confess to not allowing my kettle on board to whistle.

Also, to make light of maritime superstitions can, it's said cause madness in the perpetrator - ah well, I had better go now as I am due back in the asylum at 3pm. Roy

Did read somewhere (here?) that 'unlucky' myth had it's history in the practice of carving a boat's name onto the main mast. Changing it's name meant carving out the old name and carving in the new one - weakening the mast and making it more likely to break just when you don't need it to... unluckily!

You need to make Poseidon and his associates aware of the re-naming to avoid bad luck ... (from www)

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to expunge for all time from your records and recollection the name (insert old name here) which has ceased to be an entity in your kingdom.

As proof thereof, we submit this ingot bearing her name to be corrupted through your powers and forever be purged from the sea. (From the bow, drop a metal tag with the old name ingraved into the sea).

In grateful acknowledgment of your munificence and dispensation, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court. (Pour at least half of the bottle of Champagne into the sea from East to West. The remainder may be passed among your guests.)

Oh mighty and great ruler of the seas and oceans, to whom all ships and we who venture upon your vast domain are required to pay homage, implore you in your graciousness to take unto your records and recollection this worthy vessel hereafter and for all time known as (insert new name), guarding her with your mighty arm and trident and ensuring her of safe and rapid passage throughout her journeys within your realm.

In appreciation of your munificence, dispensation and in honour of your greatness, we offer these libations to your majesty and your court. (At this point, Champagne, poured into the sea from West to East.)

Then you need to address the gods of the winds

Oh mighty rulers of the winds, through whose power our frail vessels traverse the wild and faceless deep, we implore you to grant this worthy vessel, (insert new name), the benefits and pleasures of your bounty, ensuring us of your gentle ministration according to our needs.

(Facing north, pour a generous libation of Champagne into a Champagne flute and fling to the North as you intone :) Great Boreas, exalted ruler of the North Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavours, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your frigid breath.

(Facing west, pour the same amount of Champagne and fling to the West while intoning :) Great Zephyrus, exalted ruler of the West Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavours, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your wild breath.

(Facing east, repeat and fling to the East.) Great Eurus, exalted ruler of the East Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavours, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your mighty breath.

(Facing south, repeat, flinging to the South.) Great Notus, exalted ruler of the South Wind, grant us permission to use your mighty powers in the pursuit of our lawful endeavours, ever sparing us the overwhelming scourge of your scalding breath.

Bugger that for a game of marbles. Your going to look a right pillock with every Thamas, Richard and Harold taking the Micheal out of you wetting themselves. Just peel of the old name and stick another one on.

Hey, it's a good cause for a party ... isn't it??? Why not have some fun having a proper ceremony observing some tradition and invite a few friends along to party afterwards ??... we will irrespective...., but then again, we are not located on the Thames and I do not care what people think that about me .....

Don't need a ceremony for a party, just slap the "ol gals" backside with a hearty gaffaw and tell her to "break out some nibbles m'dear".........works for me!

Hello,

If she is part 1 registered, you will need to tell the MCA's Register of Seamen and Shipping of the change, (just as you will have done for the change of ownership when you bought her back or re-registered her?)

The full details are on the MCA Website at;
http://www.mcga.gov.uk/c4mca/reg_pleas_vess_msf_1311_rev_4.01.pdf

Part 1 helps proves ownership and mortgages on the vessel, and if you do not need this it might be easier to go with the SRR route.

Good luck with the new name.

Hi All
Thanks for all the responses
Yep Part 1 lapsed early in 2003 which is a shame as it would have cost only a small amount to keep that going. Now its around £750 ! so I won't be doing that
OK, so the marina, the insurers, lombard and the MCA
Hopefully that will keep everyone happy.
Regards
Chris

£750!! Sounds like you have been offered duff advice. I have just re-registered Spectrum Too - cost me £130 to MCA and £135 to the RYA for a new tonnage measure and I could change the name back to Spectrum Too (PLEASE do not ask what the last owner had called her) and also changed the registry port back to Poole to keep her as original as pos.

Go on, what was she called b4
Mine was called Sea Zi, knowing what my buddies are like, I wouldn't put it past them to slip an extra "L" in there. I would

Change the name whilst the boat is out of the water. The Sea Gods and Orcs then don't know that the name has been changed. This avoids the bad luck. Alternatively get in a Greek Priest to say a prayer over it.

Mrs D said she heard Terry Wogan talking about this on the radio and apparently it's only unlucky if you change the name while the yacht is in the water. I guess that's 'cos people kept falling off while trying to apply those name transfers hanging over the bows!

They had changed her name to NEREID'S NOD (sorry to all who are lovers of Nereid and her nods...). They wanted a boat name with their surname (REID) in (why???). Then they had it written in fancy script so it looked like NERD'S NOD.

Was this unlucky? Apparently the port engine blew up off Eastbourne but I think this was due to them not bothering to check the oil rather than anything devine. Changing the name back to Spectrum Too has not seen any adverse reactions which copious amounts of cash could not fix.

Mike
