Changing belts

As per title I want to change the belts on my TAMD41P. Access to the front of the engine is extremely limited and it’s impossible to see the bolts I need to loosen on the alternator. Does anyone have a decent photo of the front of the engine or know the size of the two bolts I need to loosen? I’ll have to do the job by touch unless anyone has a nifty technique for doing this job.

Not a job I have done, yet, and not looking forwad to it due the the restricted access. However, I have noticed that the three bolts securing the alternator do not have loose nuts on the other end so at least each can be tightened with just one hand from the front of the engine Also, this video shows a good tool for adjusting, and holding, the tension while tightening the bolts
If no-one else replies then we will all be waiting for you to tell us how it is done ?.

PS, although you said "two bolts" you may need to loosen the one that holds the adjuster arm as the long adjustment slot in the arm appears straight, not an arc, so you may not get sifficient swing on the alternator inless the arm is loose both ends.

I’m hoping it might be fairly straightforward although poking around down there the other day wasn’t optimism inducing ? What was obvious was the rubber dust on my hand, the belts are a good tension but at least 120 hours old. Also it’s a job I’d like to be confident of doing at sea.
Hopefully only 2 bolts looking at the manual.

Volvo Paul reckons the adjuster strap bolt is 12mm. Volvo TAMD41 belt tension

I would be extremely surprised if the pivot bolts were 17mm.


A 41 doesn't have an adjuster screw as per the 44, slacken the top bolt , slacken the lower bolt and use a suitable bar or lond screwdriver to force the alternator away from the engine then tighten the lower 12mm headed bolt, then the top bolt.

Yes I've often wondered about this as sods law it's going to be an at sea problem for me one day (haven't tried it yet but I carry spare belts).

When I changed ours on a tamd41a , I found the difficult bit was tensioning the belts. Access on ours is very limited but undoing the bolts was easy IIRC, for tensioning, another pair of hands is useful as the heat exchanger is in the way.

Had a play yesterday (got the bruises to prove), pivot bolt is 16mm and 12mm for the adjuster bolt. Waiting for a turnbuckle to arrive for tensioning, belts need replacing as one is slacker than the other. Ordered an M4 turnbuckle in order to fit the gap between crank and alternator.
