Chandleries

Why is spring a surprise to chandlers?

Probably for the same reason that Monday mornings always come as a surprise to Train Companies...

I'm about to buy a Raymarine ST2000. Yachtbits online £341 incl postage, local chandlery TCS £359. Is my loyalty worth £18? No.

No, but you could try taking the quote to your local and asking if he will price match, he may just do so and that would be easier if any problems occur.

Electronics is a completely different 'kettle of fish'. They are very expensive to stock, so small, privately owned, chandleries cannot order the quantities to be able to reduce the purchase prices.

jgtech.com have the ST2000+ for sale @ £329.00 inc. VAT & P&P!

My local chandlery is on-line too. But it bugs me that their shop prices are often higher. So I have to order on-line for in-store pickup, and once I'm there I rarely make an impulse buy. (Being female I normally like impulse buys! Fortunately this desire is only for boaty bits. I'm a weird female!)

I would recommend the cahndlery at Iron Wharf Boatyard in Faversham. NIce traditional muddy yard full of "projects" but the chadlery cannot be faulted. If wander in for a larger purchase such as an autopilot and tell him what price you can get it for on the net, he will order it for you and generally beat the web price.
Stocks all the stuff you would normally want there and then as well like nuts bolts paint etc. If he doesn't have it he can get it within a few days.
Quite right we must support the small chandlers. If they all die out because of the web ones who will we go to when we need a new giggle pin to stop the boat sinking!

Ring up or visit TCS and ask them to match. I have found generally they will match if they can. And then you have the after sales service local to you. I fit out on the East Coast over winter and find TCS are often cheaper than online chandlers. And they sell loose screws and bolts as well.

Amazing as it sounds, Top Deck in Fowey is my recommendation.
I walked past the tourist trappings and fashion clothes during the Easter Holidays and asked for toilet waste hose.
To my amazement, out the back, under the stairs they has about 50 meters of exactly what I was looking for.
I hacked off a couple of meters and was able to repair an embarrassing leak.
Top Deck = Top Points

I agree with Top Deck in Fowey
I bought Pasarell in Fowey last year and bought various bits from them, thinking I would pay over the odds. Actually very reasonable.
Down there at Easter this year I bought a bag of wooden bungs for £6.50. The previous week I'd bought exactly the same bag from a well known Bursledon chandlery for £15.90!
