By tieing through the link they dont migrate, also if left nice an loose strangely the windlass seems to tear them off less regularly.

orange ,, well it came in the bag so seemed a shame not to use them !!! or snooker council introduce new colour for persistant smokers.

Re: cable ties as cable markers

Maplin electronics are currently doing 850 piece cable tie packs for £6.49 containing 3 sizes in 4 colours. Could be a good buy for a group of club members who could share them out large ones for large boats etc.

The ordinary ones about 1/4 inch wide and 4 long, incidentaly we use to paint , but found after the first week especialy after rhine use , they were nolonger any use

Flaking on the deck is not practical in our case, and yes they are visable on the fly.

Not to disparage others electronic devices, I like to keep it simple...... especially as how wet it gets while washing the chain etc

Brilliant! That's going to be the system for my chain once it has been regalvanized.

I too have been vexed and intrigued by the issue of chain marking.

the problem with most systems, though, is that yoiu can't instantly tell- from just looking at the chain, or from a dinghy, for example - how much chain is out? - unless one of the markers is showing, and you know the multiplier, and haven't changed it, and have briefed the crew, and so on.

So, my idea to add to all the others is as follows, and this seems most easily understood by novice crew and nebies top the boat.

The first ten metres nearest anchor isn't marked at all
Next ten metres is painted (most any old paint, or carp inat dries quickly) is red
next ten metres after red is yellow
next ten metres after yellow is green
next ten brown
next ten blue
next pink
leave the rest

So, with any red showing, you know that there is at least 10 metres out, and red scores 1 at snooker. With yellow showing, you know there is at least 20 metres down - and yellows scores 2 at snooker. And so on. Easy to command, easy to check, wherever the chain stops.

Bit mad i know. But anyway.

So, the whole chain, except the first 10 m gets painted. If I have 60m, I need 6 colours.... hmm... sounds odd at first, but grows on you. It is pretty foolproof, and the repainting wouldn't need to be so often as non-whole-chain methods with specially selected number of links. V interesting. I have marked mine with the simple two ties at 3m intervals - and will see how that works. If it turns out to have significant disadvantages, then your method would certainly be an option :=)

Second thoughts... it does have the down side of 60m of chain to be painted, and that could be quite a messy affair, apart from the cost. (I don't keep old paint - amongst masses of old junk that I threw out many moons ago).

Sounds like a recipe for a rainbow tinted foredeck after the anchor has been retrieved.
