Centre Cleat for Single handed Mooring

I use these cleats that can go on genoa tracks. Could do with being a tadge larger, but I manage with them.

As to position - I can move them along the track if necessary, although they exit a fairlead. The best poition might be where the boat is widest - this will reduce chance of chafe if the angles are tight.

The above responses to this post have been exceedingly helpful and I thank those of you who have contributed. On taking a closer look at the deck of Peter Robyn, which has a good, wide deck, there is on each side a shouldered eye bolt fitted amidships. I might try a carbine spring hook attached to a block with a line threaded on the ready to put on one side or the other. How does that sound? Any comments? Peter

HAH! Cheeky So & So! (Was going to be rude, there.)

*YOU* Will have to wait for a month, or so, because the list of jobs-to-be-done got to the state that I decided to lift Ayla out for a month to get them done. Aching like mad, as today I've changed the cutless bearing, shaft seal, heads through-hull, fitted a rope cutter & re-instated the self tacking jib track (but you wouldn't know what one of them is /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif)

Just got to scrape back the very flakey antifouling now, so if you're at a loose end.... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll give you a shout early March, maybe?

Andy

(Sorry for off topic).

I find it one of the most used cleats in fact and a standard 8 - 10" version is not bad size.
Yes - I get occasional sheet caught - but that's only when they are flapping around when I get stuck in irons etc.
Position - personally I like it just fwd of midships a touch so that it aids keeping boat alongside and also can be used to pivot boat by use of engine / rudder.

It's not only coming alongside or departing that they are very useful. They give proper points to make fast springs, tie of dinghy for working alongside, rafting up you can control gap between adjacent boats, even makeshift points to lash a halyard when working on a stay and needs tension etc.
Having had midships cleats - I would always fit to any next boat I have. I would not use stanchion bases, rigging points. toe rails or removeable cleats - I like to know I can put weight on mine without concern.
