Central Heating..

Hi,

I am a new user of this site and would welcome a bit of info on central heating for boats which I am contemplating installing this winter. I am looking at the Wabesto and Ebespacher units. Does anyone have any comments - good or bad, on either of these systems. Input very much appreciated.

I decided on the eberspacher last year and am very happy with it (D4 airtronic - with 5 outlets) the amount of heat on full power is unbelievable, but it is also very controllable.

Agree with Talbot, super piece of kit, would make sure you get the thermoststic control with programmer though. Nice to be able to keep boat aired once or twice a day and ensure its warm when you arrive Friday pm.

Have had boats with Eberspacher and Webasto - nothing much to choose between them - both very effective.

The cheapest and most effective way to heat your boat is build a log fire in the centre of the saloon. Remember to surround the fire with bricks and always throw a bucket of water on it before going ashore.
Having said all that, I understand the new Webastos are the bees knees.

Byron, that's just stupid, all the bugs crawl oot the logs and get all over the place. Its much better with coal. We always polish our coal before bringing it on the boat though. Hope that helps.

Polish it? No, do as the samrt steam launches do and have it smart white(!!) linen bags, then no risk of dirtying your hands.

Jimi you didn't think this out. Bugs make a satisfying 'crack' when they burn. In the winter Eileen and I often sit in front of a roaring log fire while I pick the Nits out of her hair and flick them on the fire. Oh! how we laugh as they go pop.

Au contraire, whilst entranced by this image of cozy domestic bliss, I fear its not entirely true. How can you hear the pop of the bugs over the crackling of a blazing log fire? I'm sure you must be a secret coalie! Come on admit it .. bet you've got a big toasting fork as well!

Thank you all for your comments. Yesterday I ordered a Webasto. Like the idea that I can turn it on from my mobile phone!!! No too sure about the fire in the saloon - just think what it would do to the headlining!!! Must admit to using an old tried and tested method - an inverted terracotta flower pot on top of a gas ring. I am told this is what the old lightermen used to do on the Thames and, IT DID WORK but can only be recommended on small boats.
