And, of course subjective.

yes
i've never done a cruise, and probably never will.
as a child, in the late 50's and early 69's i crossed the atlantic many times on liners - i recall it being a lot of fun. Somewhere I still have a 1'st class passenger list from the Queen Mary, with me: "Master ______". My father's employer was paying for these trips...

anyway - there is undoubtedly a huge class element to the dislike of cruise ships, and while I can't say i like them, I don't judge them either.

and - i doubt they are as "bad" for the environment as people claim. If you figure a few thousand people are living, eating, and doing everything on the boat,, the footprint per person is probably a lot less than a type of holiday that I often take, where I rent a car and drive around for a week or three, transporting only my wife and I. We stay in hotels, eat at restaurants, etc that don't benefit from the environmental economies of scale that these ships do.

to each their own. I mostly try to avoid places where these ships go. Some of these are probably expensive, but I think in many cases they are quite inexpensive all-inclusive deals, for people without much money. They have as much of a right to a holiday as I do.

That was quick, we sailed alongside as we returned from Cowes and she departed Southampton on Sunday. I commented there weren't many people on the balconies.

Looks like she went directo ACoruna……Tomorrow Queen Victoria is arriving, not picked very nice weather we had ice up in the mountains.

The one to choose is The World -we saw it coming into las Palmas and it’s very modest in size if not in the costs involved but many clearly are with money to fund. . If you are going down market Silversea might be a more realistic option from royal carribean I’m told. . We are not really attracted to large cruise liners and the last time I went cruising was at time of Munich olympics in the 70s however we are embarking on our first Uniworld cruise next year but a much smaller vessel so be interested to see how we get on .

I like the design painted on her hull amidships, makes her look like a Paddle Steamer...Well sort of, if you squint through half closed eyes... :giggle:

Is there? I genuinely have no idea which “class” likes/dislikes cruises? Of the people I know who enjoy cruises there are retired professional classes (eg. former anaesthetist) and those who left school with no qualifications and would often be described working class (but with a comfortable final salary pension) along with young professionals (early 30s) who enjoy everything being on a plate but not having to make and decisions.

My wife's parents are big cruise fans.. My wife has always wanted to go with them so with MIL being 80 next year I've finally agreed as there might not be much more time. At around 4500 for us two and two kids for a week I wouldn't call it a poor person's holiday in any way, in fact it will be our most expensive holiday ever.
