CAV Fuel Filter

I saw the posts about replacing a CAV with a spin- on type. The SFA 11 assembly with a Delphi 496 filter from ssl dieselparts was recommended. Can anyone confirm it is a direct replacement for an old centre bolt CAV?

I have a CAV fitted with a Delphi 296 and inspection bowl/ water seperator that bolts down through the centre. It's a nightmare to get at through a hatch in the cockpit floor and requires me to lay prone under the centre traveller and work at literally finger tip length to fit the standard CAV. It's bad enough in the yard, there is no way I could do it in anger afloat.

I see the ssl SFA11 delphi 496 one doesn't have an inspection bowl but I wonder if it still seperates out water that can be drained off through a small tap below?

Yes, I can confirm that the SFA11 from ssl diesel parts is a direct replacement for the CAV296 filter assembly. I replaced both the primary and main filter assemblies on my BMC 1.5 (marinised by AMC) last Thursday. The bolt holes and pipes all line up exactly the same as the old CAV296 and the thread sizes are the same, ie. 1/2" UNF.

The only slight difference I found, which was also noted by one of the other contributors, was that the hole where the pipe enters the filter head is slightly smaller and two of my pipes needed the ends trimmed down to about 3mm (ie. beyond the olive). Easily done with the Dremmel. The whole job took a couple of hours (including going home to get the Dremmel).

The Delphi HDF496A filters supplied with the SFA11 kit have a tap at the bottom to drain off water. I have used these on both the primary and main filters. I believe these filters are specified at 20 microns so when I next change them I will probably fit the Baldwin equivalents which are specified at 5 microns.
