Anyone know where I might obtain a complete CAV spin on type fuel filter (the replacement one for the glass bowl type) I have the glass bowl type which have been great but they are a nightmare to seal when changing the filter hence it's back to the spin on type.

ASAP do not have any, nor are they likely to in the forcible future and they have recommended a Racor 120AT but its almost twice the price, is it twice as good??

Racor is the rolls Royce of filters. I personally would go for the 500 series. 20 times better than CAV

It's a filter, nothing more, nothing less. Given the same grade of filter element, both the CAV and the Racor will filter equally effectively. There's no basic difference (except price) between a spin-on Racor and a spin-on CAV.

I suggested the 500 series which is a different animal.

It is, but the famed centrifugal process won't work with the small fuel flow of a typical yacht engine. And, after that, an x micron filter is an x micron filter. To say it's markedly better is a bit like saying that a £150 designer kettle boils water better than a £10 Argos kettle.

Don't agree. My filter dumps stuff in the bowl. Also I can change the filter in minutes with no spillage AT ALL. I defy you to do this with a CAV. So we'll worth replacing for a well designed piece of kit

At the risk of hijacking this thread, I am also considering changing my CAV fuel filter ( Glass bowl type with Delphi 296 filter) for a Racor 500FG spin on filter. However am I correct in saying that the thread size of the ports are different beween the two units and I will therefor require adaptors for my ( metal) fuel pipes.

The Racor 500 series is not a spin on unit. The filter come out upwards - you undo the T handle - and extract and replace the filter - without mess - and I have normally done it without having to bleed the system.

I am not sure about the fittings - I dont remember that being an issue changing from a CAV which I had before - horrid messy thing!

After a filter blockage in rough weather resulted in a rather fraught entry to Portsmouth Harbour under sail, I went to my local car breakers and got a pair of matching spin-on filter units and plumbed them in parallel with valves so I run on one and have the other primed & ready to go at the twist of a couple of valves. As the fuel's gravity fed, if I had to, I could change filters and prime the new one with the engine running.

Total cost was well under £100 and I'll be changing both elements this year for the first time in nearly 10 years because they're getting rusty.

Thanks Chris, I stand corrected, I also like the idea of changing the filter without mess. I note that Ebay shows a number of 'Racor Type FG500' clones at about a third of the price of the genuine article. Has anyone here tried these presumably Far East copies. I could have two units with change-0ver valves for the price of the original. I would still be able to use genuine Racor filter cartridges.

The port sizes on the Racor are certainly somewhat esoteric and presumably different to the CAV.

I recently installed a new 500FG and got the correct connections from Hyphose http://www.hyphose.com/

They managed to come up with a two part configuration each side whereas the best I could get elsewhere was three components each side.

Ah yes - I had 2 tails with the correct connectors made by Hyphose - very helpful people.

As for the chinese copies, just hope the quality and strength of the plastic is up to scratch. You get what you pays for very often.

Don't do it! I obtained two but the engineering was so esoteric that I sent them back.

I've just fitted the spin on filters as supplied by ssldiesel bought off ebay and the bought extra filters from ssl - I also was p***** off with the cav filters. Mine came with unf thread so a direct replacement, they also do a metric size as well. Well pleased, apparently the filter is a standard Bosch one.

Do you have links or part numbers??

I saw the posts about replacing a CAV with a spin- on type. The SFA 11 assembly with a Delphi 496 filter from ssl dieselparts was recommended. Can anyone confirm it is a direct replacement for an old centre bolt CAV?

I have a CAV fitted with a Delphi 296 and inspection bowl/ water seperator that bolts down through the centre. It's a nightmare to get at through a hatch in the cockpit floor and requires me to lay prone under the centre traveller and work at literally finger tip length to fit the standard CAV. It's bad enough in the yard, there is no way I could do it in anger afloat.

I see the ssl SFA11 delphi 496 one doesn't have an inspection bowl but I wonder if it still seperates out water that can be drained off through a small tap below?

My CAV type filter used to drive me mad because it leaked the whole time
When i came on the forum somebody likened me to a spanner monkey - which really wound me up
Then my cousin who is a farmer boy told me that there were 1000's of the damned things so they must work
He then suggested i check if i had a clone-- Yes!!!!
A new delphi fitted & never leaked since

Mine is in an awkward place so i solved that by fitting longer hoses each side. I then fitted studs to the bulkhead & butterfly nuts to hold the filter
Now i just undo the nuts & can hold the filter over a bucket to service,
