CAT 3208 TA Engines

Sundays Child, I stand by my comments on the 3208TA in that thread. I'm on my 3rd boat with the 442hp versions of these engines and I've not had any trouble with any of them but mine were all less than 1000hrs/6 yrs old. Rumour has it that the 442/435/425hp version (the quoted power output seemed to differ depending on the market) needs a rebuild earlier than the lower powered versions because it's the most stressed so the 375hp version should be even better. They are a previous generation design without electronic control (not a bad thing IMHO) and they do drink a bit more fuel than the latest designs and are known for depositing exhaust soot on the transom but, overall, they're sound engines
As with any purchase you must get a full engine survey and oil analysis done

Thanks all. I have a kind offer from a friend on a boat I've know all her considerable and well-cared for life (one full-time and one part-time crew throughout). I'll be having her surveyed and appreciate all the advice, particularly on this thread in answer to my questions, but also through sifting through anywhere "3208" came up on other threads. It'll definitely help knowing where to look. Fingers crossed, all will be well. Thanks again!

3208's are exellent, there is a few cat engines which are best avoided but this aint one of them.

Did a bit of research on these last year when i was looking for a new boat.
