We may be in the lucky postion of having a 5 month sabbatical next winter, and would like to cruise in the Caribbean. Question is - how do we go about obtaining a boat? Long term charter? Buy a boat out there and sell it on at the end? Buy a boat to use then leave it to charter at the end of the trip? Any experiences of buying/selling in the Caribbean, or putting a private boat out to charter would be gratefully received.

there was a long thread on this topic a couple of months ago, i think on the liveaboard forum. i don't think there was a lot of help to be had. you will either have to bite the bullet on charter costs or take a big hit on buying/selling expenses. if you are really lucky you might find someone who needs a boat caretaker.

1. Forget the buy/sell. Buying is easy, selling can take a very long time.

2. Consider many US yachts spend their winters in the Caribbean.

3. The cost of charter has a lot built into it; dockage, marketing, high maintenance, briefings, weekly turnover/cleaning. Eliminating a lot of those issues should bring down the cost considerably if the charter company has the right yacht and a not-too-anxious owner.
