Cargo ship moored on the Blackwater

What's this doing there I wonder

How big. mebe awaiting to go to Rowhedge

Meant to look as I was just checking on TG but forgot. It was supposed to be there yesterday by the AIS track. Taking a lee from the SWerly I suppose. Lots of stuff anchored in the lee of the Foreland.

In the 1980s there were several largish ships anchored about there. Either waiting for work or for the scrapyard.

It could be going to pick up wood chips from Brightlingsea, the cargo ships that do that are substantial and need a good rise of tide to get in and out.
I believe the chips go to Sweden for use as fuel in power stations.
Back in Blighty, Slough Trading Estate has it's own power station that can and does burn wood chips
BUT the owners claim the fuel is very inefficient and impose a charge on every truckload delivered to them.
Strange world, is'nt it?

Are you telling me we export wood chips to Sweden. Rather akin to coals to Newcastle init

Wow those pictures take me back. I lived in Tollesbury from '74 till 1999 and I remember seeing those moored ships from my living room window and wondered what they were doing there. This was before I was interested in nautical stuff. They used to look quite good at night with their anchor lights all of a twinkle.
I assume that they were close to the St Peters Flats in about 10 meters of water

Suppose they are all recycled now into many and various white goods and razor blades !!

There were over 40 at one time and they were moored right up to Steeple Stone
