Not wishing to prolong embarrassment but how did this occurr ?.

A lesson to all. He was coming in at a seamanlike speed but the gear linkage broke so when the guy went for reverse he got increased revs but the gear stayed in forward. In the split second it took to realise he was actually accelerating it was too late. Luckily he had the foresight not to attempt to turn into his berth amongst other boats and aimed for the empty walkway. Surprisingly little damage. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Despite doing well on the Oral part of the exam Freds examiner felt that he didnt quite come up to the required standard on the practical /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Watched somebody attempt this in a Slumsail a couple of years back. Engine failed to start (completely diff problem) coming in to harbour on day 1 so we had to tow the boat in alongside. Repaired overnight.
On day 2 they tried to moor in a stiff F6, came in perfectly but reverse failed to stop - so skipper did natural thing and used full throttle in "reverse", but as gear linkage had failed only served to power faster onto pontoon. Fortunately didn't get quite so far on before dropping back and nobody hurt.
So don't laugh unless you have personally checked your own gear linkage in the last few weeks !
This actually happens about biannually at T. Skippers forgetting to put on a bowspring when mooring into the tide, forgetting that it turns round, and spring tides with wind against tide just hoick the bow up onto the pontoon. (Shh, they are usually French skippers, and a certain sailing school has been an offender this way).
I had a client who had the linkage problem as a certain yacht broker had assembled it between delivery and acceptance. They had used the wrong part. In this case, the Bavaria in question failed to mount the pontoon but pushed a foot and a half slot into the bow.
"I told you that sailing into the marina with the main up wasn't a good idea".
"Skipper, I think plan B would have worked better".
"Whadya mean get the fenders out".
"Quick, get that defaced blue down".
Skipper to crewman "report our safe arrival to the CG".
Wiil someone please contact "Walcon" and enquire about thier pontoons AVS.
I could go on but I bet you're bored /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
