Hi all, ive been in Turkey for a few years now and want to sail slowely through the greek islands, ive seen some of it, but not much, and want to take the next few years seeing it.
Ive asked people i know and i keep recieving mixed messages, they didnt like greece that much they say,,,I cant believe that there is no where nice to see there...
Come on there must be,
I became all deflated hearing their comments and that they prefered Turkey,
Im all set up well for good anchoring, and dont go into marinas if i can help it.
Im hoping that you guys and gals are going to reasure me about this.
I google earth places i want to go and it all looks fine and dandy to me,

Waiting in anticipation,

Colin,

Be brave, open minded and go and see for yourselves, you should be pleasantly surprised. Of course there are good and not so good places to be. I agree mostly with JimB's well informed site with likes and dislikes, but not all, so we are all different. Wonderful cruising ground and great places to see and no call to prayer at some ungodly hour.
We much prefer the Aegean and Peloponnese to the Ionian, there again it's down to personal taste. There's no to many marinas, plenty of town keys where there is no charge or very little if there is a charge, and anchorages in abundance.
For a cruising guide the Alias Greek guide is far superior to the Heikell although a little pricey, imo it's worth the money. . . . . Enjoy.

Also recommend looking at Jim B´s site, it´s very good.
Re the Ionian we spent many nights anchored last season where we were the only boat there overnight, it is a large area with hubndreds of places to go and worth a visit as are the other places mentioned.

I am well aware who Bill Cooper and his good lady are! As you can see i do not fear voicing my opinion if I think they are wrong, and unjustified. The world is full of so called celebrities, it does not make a damning statement right does it.

Having said that, go in Greece as far away from the blasted flotillas and Sunsail as you can get.
On the whole the Ionian is overcrowded with grockles, the tavernas do little but pork chop and chips, and the private yacht is often pushed to one side by arrogant flotilla leaders.

I for one think him right here

I find your flippant remark quite sad really, you are obviously not very willing to search beyond the tourist traps,

HI
I think the above is hardly appropriate in Binch`s case. And if it was, is it nessasary to be so Damming to a elderly man, in his own addmission not in the best of health?

Oh come on! it was not a personal attack as such! It was simply a reply to a post I found a bit over the top regarding a generalization of the Ionian, the food on offer and bad boy flotilla skippers. Surely I have the right to reply, otherwise what's the point of a forum if not for discussion.

If Binch feels that I have upset or offended him then I apologise.

If you want to get away from both flotillas and other yachties and find unspoilt places, I'd suggest going up between Evia and the mainland, heading into the gulf of Volos and then up to the 'three fingers' of northern Greece. Very unspoilt, lovely seafood.

Ionian Fan.....!

Well, I've been sailing the Ionian now for 15 years....still love it AND still finding loads of new places.
August can get a bit hectic in the more popular spots like Paxos, although it wasn't too bad this year. IMO, sailing around Levkas is the best for wind.
As others have said, go see for yourself.

Regards.

Grockle:-

A Devonian term for people who have large ears, and extended neck, wear flat caps and drive a car down the middle of the road with their heads turning from side to side. They are alleged to be unable to reverse a car and expect cows and tractors and trailers to get out of their way.

Greece, Sea Guide

Thanks for that - Eagleray does have them. The author would seem to be
Capt. Nicholas Ilias and is a 'series of 4 books that cover the whole of Greek coastlines and seas'. Showing at 84 euro per book but also available from www.sailingbooks.co.uk at £90 per book. Think I will wait till I arrive and then buy locally as necessary.

Nikolaos Ilias, 4 volumes in both Greek and English, includes charts

In Greece in the chandlers you are likely to pay even more for them.

They are worth it though, they make the other guides look positively useless by comparison.

Interesting price - perhaps Jim B is being too generous with his information.
