The sea off Cannes was pretty rough today. Quick translation from local news this evening:
A pleasure boat hit a wave off the port of Cannes with three people on board.
Two of them were immediately ejected. The third, a woman in her thirties, panicked, jumped overboard, engine. She was immediately caught by the propeller of the boat and died instantly.
The two passengers of the ship unharmed but shocked, were supported by emergency services.
The Coastguard dispatched a police officer on the scene.
I was at the show today but didn't hear of this incident. Wind has been picking up all day and there is some biggish chop out there as a result. Sad to hear of the report.
Your hunch was right apparently -here's this Looks like yet other RIB accident http://www.magazzu.com/en/m-gt.html

Woman dies during a sea trial in Cannes
Sad news has appeared online from Cannes where a woman has died after jumping from a moving powerboat and getting caught in its propeller. A full investigation is currently ongoing by the police.
From an official press communiqué, we know that a little before 19:00 on Saturday 12th September, a powerboat has hit a large wave 1.8 kilometers from the coast. Three passengers were onboard at the time, two of them have been immediately ejected from the boat on impact whilst the remaining woman jumped, presumably in panic, and got caught in the propeller resulting in a lethal outcome.
Rescued by firefighters, the two remaining passengers were in a state of shock but safe.
Italian powerboat magazine, il Gommone, has indicated, without quoting any sources, that the sinister happened whilst the group was on a sea trial of a boat by Cantieri Magazzù. It further goes on to claim that the allegedly Cypriot journalist was at the time in command of the boat although this remains speculations at this moment in time.
Bit more digging -another killcord incident

Actually, the IT boat magazine reports that the conditions were good, and the crew was thrown overboard because of a hard over steering of the Cypriot journalist, who was in command and had no kill cord.
Regardless, very sad indeed.
In the above linked webpage they do say that the kill cord was not attached - which I suppose means that there was one, to start with.
I wouldn't hold my breath on the accuracy of these articles, though...
I spoke with a folk who was at Cannes as an exhibitor, and asked him about the accident.
He told me that he barely heard of it from another guy who read that on the internet, because at the boat show they managed to practically cover the sad news completely.
Now, I understand that nobody of the French in charge of the show wanted the death of a young lady to spoil the event and its final fireworks.
But they could have arranged at least 10 seconds of silence, if they thought than one minute was too much... :disgust:
