La Gomera has some great non holiday resort type marinas. San Sebastian is the first on the s/E coast. It can be difficult going west to east out there with the Canary Current setting you to the west & N/E Trades blowing fairly constant. Also dangerous winds between Tenerife & La Gomera. Theres a small shelterd anchorage(free) to the S/east of Los Christianos fishing port (Tenerife) If you dont mind the swell. From here you also have the option of the island La palma. If you get to La Gomera (San Seb) you'll find a few brits there who'll be pleased to show you the ropes etc.

The marina prices are on the Internet and the Atlantic Islands pilot will give you the details. If you are thinking of staying in a marina for a while it would be worth pottering around and visiting most of them. It's usually good sailing but with strong gusts between islands.

We had a fab 2 years in Puerto Calero, Lanzarote. Regular visits to Rubicon, plus Graciosa in the North, Coralejo and Castillo on Fuertaventura. My favourite end of Islas Canarias.

Tried Mogan on Gran Canaria, ok but limited on other places to do short trips. Las Palmas really only does it for the Arc.

Bottom end of Fuerta tends to be a bit, er, Germanic.

Tenerife is very tourist. All the marinas are ok pit stops but wouldnt want to stay. Thats Santa Cruz, Radazul, Colon and Gigantes. San Migel down SE bit probably shows best promise but personally not overwhelmed with the island.

Gomera, as mentioned is ok but limited really. Same up at La Palma, great short visit but would not want to stay too long.

Clear fave of mine, then, Lanzarote!

Hope this helps.

The new version of Atlantic Islands has just been published. I was one of the proof-readers, so I know it pretty well. It is full of useful information in a very readable form; a must-have if you are going to the area.

With a fair wind & following sea, Santa Cruz de La Palma to Valle Gran Rey, down the western side of La Gormera. Must be the best day sail in the Canaries.

I wonder what it said about the new marina at Garachico, in northern Tenerife. Last time I was there the new harbour wall was washed away, just as they were about to finish it.

Familiar with Tenerife - in laws live there. Not impressed either by the marinas or by the sailing. Lanzagrotty is just that - bit grotty with volcanic sand and areas looking like the back of the moon - but the marinas are a bit better. Been to Fuertiventura and that looked like the best compromise.

The Tenerife marinas looked pretty full late last year - check there is space where you want to go. The islands arent over endowed with secure anchorages by our standards.
