Can you see the Scillies from Lands End

Given a clear day, you can certainly see 'em from the clifftop at Lan'zen. You can't see them when standing on the coachroof of an ordinary yacht, when abeam Lan'zen. You'd need to be at least half-a-dozen miles further on, or well up the mast.

However, at night, you can see the loom of the 3 big lights - The Bishop, Round Island and Peninnis Lighthouses - from abeam Lan'zen, and they become 'dipping' about an hour out past the end of England. On a really clear dark night you can also see the Seven Stones light.

They're easy to find - just follow the red and white helicopters, and I understand the powerful radio beacon on Round Island is still transmitting.

The gent on the left is my Great-grandfather. He was assistant keeper of both Round Island and Bishop Rock lights, in succession, and finally Head Keeper of Portland Breakwater. My grandfather was born on Scilly but left for Weymouth at age 3.
