I’ve searched the internet for back splice instructions for the end of some 8 plait rope but can only find eye splice or end to end instructions can anyone help me out with a link or some instructions please or is it just a case I will have to whip it?

One of the problems to 'back-splice' plaited rope - is that the form is not as stable to keep the strands organised to start the splice. A 3 strand rope for example will normally have a 'Crown' made before splicing back into the lay. To create a 'Crown' or holding form to allow splicing back is extremely difficult in plaited.

I've been splicing wire ... rope .. etc. for many years and TBH - when it comes to finishing a plaited ropes end - if its not an eye - then its either a whipping (sailmakers preferred) or the super simple blasphemous method : Heat shrink tube over the end ... shrink and then a few drops of Super Glue into the strand ends. Cut of any 'tails'.

That’s great. Thanks for the reply.

I quite like the look of a back splice in natural fibres but many sailors believe that it serves no useful purpose. Particularly on slip lines that can snag mooring rings etc. On three strand nylon/polyester rope , love the look of a really nice whipping . On braded rope whipping looks nice but I normally settle for a molten end . Apologies for supplying no useful information in reply to your question.
