Well im trying to sell my boat, dont know really what its worth. Its a Marina 15ft (think its actually longer than that though) which is in good condition, it has a 1982 Johnson Seahorse 35HP outboard which is in very good condition, however it is a non runner. I only say that because when it ran two weeks ago when I turned it off, left it then when I tried to run it a few days later the battery was on its way out so I think it just didnt have enough power to start it. It has spark and fuel mist comes out the cylinders. The trailer, its in good condition. I have just refurbished it with new suspension, plastic mudguards, I have also modified the front end so it is adjustable for different size boats. Overall a very good setup except engine not running :( so what is it worth do you think? Please note this is not a sales thread and I do not want to break any rules. Here are some pics. I hope that isnt too many photos! :D

well the obvious answer is that it's worth what someone will pay you...

you are unlikely to sell it for anything but a nominal value without the engine running, unless the trailer is in truly excellent condition (which from your earlier posts etc it's hard to categorise yours - this may be a touch harsh but you have been quite explicit)

you have the boat up twice on B&O, once listed as petrol and once diesel, so you will already have as idea (from responses) as to the value in relation to the asking price - this is the only true valuation as in line one above.

With a boat and engine of this age, an engine with a problem has to be treated as a non runner and not economically fixable. I realise that you have probably spent more than this to refurb it, but its worth £500 on boats and outboards.

However if you put the set up on Ebay you will get an awful lot more, boats like this can go for well over £1000.

If you can fix the engine cheaply, fix it, it will sell for a lot more and a lot quicker.

Ooops I have it up twice? The trailer is now in excellent condition, actually looks like a new trailer! And I have it as diesel? Woops, ah well, I have had quite a good response but it seems to have died off now. I had lots of veiwers but the trailer put everyone off. But now that is sorted I was hoping I would get some more interest. Obviously I had to put the price up because I spent alot of money on trailer. I know what you mean about it being difficult to categorise. I just dont have any money spare to buy a battery aswell as they are not cheap! (well not for me)

Understood, I just need it gone really because of the size and where we live we cant park on the road so if we have visitors it can be a bit of a tight squeeze with boat there! Is anyone willing to spare an hour or two to have a look at the engine and try and get it running? I have been told though that having a boat is like having a hole in the water that you try to plug with cash!

A lot of people believe that if you spend money on a boat then it must be worth more. This may be true if you are adding value, extra wing engine, new colour electronics etc. However when work completed is simply maintenance (engine or trailer service, relplacing worn covers or furnishings) then it doesnt add value, but it does make it more saleable. So my valuation above still stands, £500 on B&O or £1000 on Ebay.

what about borrowing a battery and starter cables ?

You will remember to ensure that if the engine starts up, you have fitted a cold water hose to the inlet, which you only turn on the moment the engine gets going.

Failing that - take it down to your nearest boating club and line up a couple of packs of beer for some help.

I could try that, dont really know anyone because I have only recently moved to the area, I have an idea though of who may be able to help me for a few beers so will try that! Thanks for the idea :D

If the engine does not run, it will be classed as scrap by any prospective buyer, end of story.

Everyone will think to themselves "if it only needs a battery, why hasn't he fitted one".

Understood, that is why Im not just saying that. And after spending hundreds of pounds on it I dont really want to fork out another hundred for a battery.

The fact still remains, without the engine being on the button, it will be considered as scrap and the package will be valued accordingly by any prospective buyers.

Not quite sure why you think it needs a £100 battery ? An El Cheapo battery from Halfords or similar will surely suffice ?

You are still talking £70 odd, and I do not have money to spend on it. I need to buy a new motherboard for my desktop which is £125 and to do that I need to sell the boat. (that is just the price of the motherboard I fit all my parts myself) And scrap would mean ready to be melted down and no good for anything, In reality its spares or repairs.

Please yourself. You asked for advice and you got some, whether you choose to take it or ignore it is your decision.

And I thank you for your advice and if I could financially afford to I would sort it out then sell it. Fortunately I have a viewer for it tommorow so we will see what happens.:D
