I have new saloon upholstery being fitted this week to my boat which is berthed in Haslar. Obviously the Company who are doing the work want to be paid. Can I travel 100 miles from home to my boat to check that everything is okay before I pay up? My wife and I have both been vaccinated and have no intention of staying the night.
I accept that my own view is biased, so is it allowed or not please? Thanks

Businesses are allowed to continue, taking necessary safety precautions, except for the sectors like hospitality and personal services specifically closed. Your trip will be in connection with the running of the contractor’s business, for them to ‘hand over’ the completed project to you.
That is my take on things. I would do it but you will have to decide your own approach.

Do you have a good rapport with any of the staff , and therefore asking them to inspect the work that has been carried out on your behalf?

Anyone here near Haslar who would take the risk of inspecting it for him? Or even take a phone and do a Facetime/Skype video inspection for Laundryman to view live?

On the basis that you can't visit a nearer place to inspect the work, it could be argued that you are entitled to travel that far.
Depend more on which copper you choose to be stopped by and how you relate to coppers under that sort of situation.
Can you borrow a white transit van? Couriers don't seem to have too much problem.

How I managed a similar situation. I had work done on my boat, a whole new chart table, significant installation. The company sent pictures of the finished work. I did not travel, 3 hours each way, different regions, illegal without a reasonable excuse. I just received the invoice, hence happy to pay based on pictures.

Everyone's idea of a decent job is very subjective. I wouldn't rely on someone else's opinion - no matter how well intentioned. Get the upholsterers to send you a load of photos. If they look ok to you offer them 3/4 payment immediately with the balance (subject to satisfaction/any alterations) when you are able to 'legally' visit and view the finished job in person. This will more than cover their outgoings and they shouldn't be out of pocket.

There are definitely more cars on the road now, you could fill the car with shopping, and borrow a small child, if stopped, you are taking the kid to school and you have been shopping, you have two chances of getting away with it, no one seems to care anymore.

Is it strictly legal? Not sure. Is it reasonable? I think so. You're vaccinated, so the risk of spreading a nasty is minimal. Keep masked, sanitised and distanced and it's not far off zero. But you're the one who'll be paying the fine, not me, so my advice is worth exactly what you're paying for it!

Would you get away with it? Almost certainly unless you have a prang or attract the attention of Plod in some other way.

Wearing your wifes underwear is never going to end well, get your own or ask her to get you some pretty things instead. If she sees you've stretched hers there'll be hell to pay!
