Can anybody identify this noise?

Jeez. Some utter wild goose chase suggestions here. Is it the same when you take the plugs out ?

Is it still doing it now that the engine is running properly?

Asking because it didn't do it after the longer run, and it could be that the irregular running is stopping the backdrive of the Bendix which ought to cause it to disengage.

In other words, there might be nothing wrong with it.

Yeah its fully working and mounted on transom.

When i start the motor on my driveway it does it every time.

The best way i can describe it is like the motor in the starter is being forced to spin faster than it wants to by the flywheel and with the speed of the flywheel it struggles to disengage causing the overspeed whine and crunching noise.

Today ive removed it, stripped it down, cleaned it fully (BTW those bloody brushes where a nightmare!)
And rebuilt.

Tomorrow is crunch time if...I've fixed it or broken it fully.

Put a teeny tiny smear of grease on the bearing of the bendix shaft (not the bendix itself and a smear on the pinion teeth to see if that will help it disengage a bit better.

Tbh i have no confidence and if it still makes the noise i think i will have to bite the bullet and buy a new one as i really dont want this to give in at sea.

I will keep you all updated in the morning folks (y)

Well if you can start it with a rope leave the motor off and run without , if no noise its the motor.

UPDATE:

FIXED-SORT OF...

Now ive stripped the starter down, cleaned, A smidge of grease on bendix shaft bearing, Grease on pinion gear teeth and she started...NO MORE WHINE OR GRINDING!!

However...the pinion now engages with the flywheel, hesitates for a second and then spins the flywheel.

So like suggested previously that will probably be down to lack of sufficient current which is either down to small to large diameter wiring from battery to motor causing a drop in current or too small of a battery 50AH.

I will repeat the process with my larger car battery 85AH, And if it still proceeds to act in this way then it confirms that the wiring is at fault.

Thanks so much to everyone who has commented and hope this helps anyone else that may have same issue in the future. Thanks so much folks ? (y)
