Camping Gaz price rise

While the boat was out of the water this Winter I put in a new gas locker that is just the right size for Camping Gaz but sadly a little too small for Calor.

I didn't worry about it as CG is more widely available in Europe - until I went to get the first cylinder of the season and found it had gone up to £12.99 a cylinder. This makes it almost exactly twice the price of Calor in £s/lb

And as if that wasn't bad enough - the cylinders are usually in a shocking state, never refurbished - and some shops won't take scruffy rusty cylinders back now because apparently CG say they are the dealer's responsibility, and they reserve the right to refuse to accept cylinders back from their dealers if they (CG) aren't happy with their condition!

Is anyone else annoyed about this? Should we make our views known, and if so to whom?

Have to agree it's a rip-off price compared to Calor. However, I've just paid £10.50 for a replacement R907 (2.75 kg butane) at my local plumbers' merchant so your £12.99 seems over the top. According to my records last year I paid £9.25. Pity you couldn't have made the locker a bit bigger. Unfortunately I have a similar problem.

Our solution is not to use the gas very often but to eat out in pubs! Costs a fortune either way.

Have to admit that it's probably us that causes the rusty cylinders because our bottle is stored for'ard in the anchor locker.

Even better, go up to 7Kg bottles from someone like HandyGas (BP). Last one recently £11.99 and cylinders always in excellent smart condition. Of course, 13Kg gets even cheaper, but a bit heavy to lift in from the dingy!

comforted by this post as our CG ran out at the weekend at Ocean Village and we were charged approx £12 for a replacement, last season had cost us under £10 and on Ocean village noticeboard price listed as £9 something- checked with staff who confirmed current approx £12 price and even offered to deliver it to our boat.

Sounds like we were charged correct "new" price- incidentally never had any problems changing cylinders regardless of condition of them and those we get in exchange very variable too.

Re: Camping Gaz comfort

Strange to be comforted by discovering that a 25% price rise was genuine and not a mistake . . .

What I want to know is how they can possibly justify it when Calor has not gone up. If I was Calor I would consider bringing out CG sized cylinders to grab that share of the market.

There's a letter taped to the counter in Shamrock Chandlery concerning this price rise. The RRP for a 907 is £12.99. The rise in price is said to be to fund the introduction of replacement cylinders to replace the older ones. Sounds to me like the manufacturers are making an excuse or have bad management processes for the repplacement of their assets (i.e. the cylinders)
