anybody know what an empty or full 4.5kg calor gas cylinder weighs? dont know whether the ones on the boat are full, half full or near empty

From the Calor website:
"What is the empty weight of bottles?
All bottles will vary depending on their size, etc. The weight written on the metal disc on the shroud is the weight of the empty cylinder"

Thanks. Whats embossed on the disc is 12 00 no units. So I assume they are lbs and oz ie 5.45kg. Interestingly, the other one is 14 12 again no units but must translate to 6.7kg

Thats an astounding 23% weight difference on a standard item. Given the cost of steel , of transport for the cylinders etc I would have expected a value engineered item within a couple of percent maximum tolerance. Wouldnt you?

Guessing but 15kg gas and 15kg for the bottle on a big one with 30 08 on the label which would be 30 kg and retest in 08.

maybe 12 00 is 12kg gross and retest in 00???

or proably not!

You don't need the tare weight if you trust Calor.

Assume it is full when you buy it.
Weigh it and note full gross weight
When it's 4.5kg lighter, its empty. (or 4.0 kg lighter, nearly empty)

Slight Fred Drift but not by much.
Where do I get a cheap spring balance for weighing gas cylinders? No need for great accuracy.
