Calling all Yorkshiremen

Re: Goole ....

My sympathies

I remember that time well, my house is on the banks of the river Ouse and when the floods were on I was in Saudi - ringing home every high tide to see if we have submerged. Fortunately not a drop passed my threshold.

If you are ever coming this way again give me a call and I will show you some of the good spots.

Cheers

Saudi ....

I had 5 years there .... Jubail, Yanbu, Jeddah, Damman, Dharan .... up to Kafji ..... Ras Saffania ......

Those were the days !!!

Re: Saudi ....

Well you saw more of the place than I did.

I was stuck in Riyadh for weeks. Became an illegal immigrant half way thro the trip and had my passport taken away.

" You get it back tomorrow --------Inshallah"

I did in the end but picked up a 1500 Riyal fine for it.

Was in Oman earlier this year - Now that is a much better place - Lovely - I could retire there - If SWMBO was game for it.

Re: Goole ....

Civilisation?

Bloody Hell there's parts of Cumbria where the locals still paint themsleves blue!

So modern and up to date that boats are only allowed to do 10 kts - they'll have a man with a red flag walking in front of them next.

Even Goole has a few Deisel engines - they arn't still steam powered. And why should Deisel give way to steam anyway?

Wonder if that was the "Audrey" you sailed on from Goole

She is run out of Goole by a charity organisation, but I believe is now up for sale as she is too expensive to run.

Must have been a long trip cos Philby defected from Beirut in Feb 1963 where he was working as a journalist. This was after a hostile interrogation resulting from information from a Soviet defector.

[/ QUOTE ] You're mixing your threads here. OK in a Susanne and Trinny kind of a way.
The only bloke qualified to walk in front of boats with a red flag got crucified, so I don't think many more will volunteer.

'Cos there's a notice on a (private) jetty that says so.

I believe it was Audrey, I stayed a night on board and we took her out early the following morning.

I may well have confused the spy, but a quick google hasn't shed any light on who it was. Perhaps it was the locals having a larf?

Ah well been a while since Ive around the Humber.

Do you know who bought her - she always looked well whatever colour she was. originally a Humber light float - South Witton I believe.

Can't help with the spy either What anyone would want to spy on around Goole I can't think

Re: What the hell does this mean?

Ah. I linked to a newspaper archive page which must be built on the fly. It worked when I revisited it after posting, but must have failed as a link for a new session.
