Nigel is planning the Sail of the Century ....... sail from Solent to Baltics ...... intention is suitable period spring / summer 2005. Pilots and Sailing notes being scutinised now to decide possible best period.

The route is undecided at moment ...... but could be either :

a) UK south coast till Diver Straits, cross straight over till French / Belgium coast ...... coast-hug till Den-Helder and then cut across to go over the top of Denmark. Down through the islands and round into Baltic ...... and finally to Latvia. The decision to stop at latvia is not final and may if decided continue to Tallinn.
b) UK south coast crossing to Euro-land at suitable point and then hug coast round to Kiel Canal ..... transit Kiel and then Baltic to Lavia / Estonia.

Now the whole point of regaleing you briny lot with this tale of intended Swashbuckling hero stuff ...... Who wants to come on this jaunt ?? I have place for 2 lucky old salts ......

Cost ? Keep me plied with a suitable beverage and do your bit of watchkeeping / helming / sail handling / mooring lines and you're on. Honest - the trip is free and you sail the boat with me .... we all group decide best way / tactic and route etc. etc. At the end of it - I will reward with a break in Baltics with sightseeing etc. The flight back to UK can be booked well in advance and Ryanair etc. are offering real CHEAP fares now - so in fact it could in real terms be less than you'd spend out on a weeks mulling about UK waters !

Think of it - Nigel on hand to hurl abuse at face to face .....

So sign up and get yer kit-bags dusted off ....

Oh yes - forgot to say 1 guy can be absolute novice - no problem ...... 'cause by the end of this one - he/she could be a sought after crew !!!!

I can see it now .... (my hankerig is the long way round over the top) ........ islands and the sound of water rushing past ..... bliss ......

So PM me with your tales of how you stood watch thru the gales of Cowes in year dot etc. and get on the shortlist ..... honest - this is a straight up offer ...........

Now if you were going around the top via Orkney and a merry jaunt across from there I might be tempted.. As for tales of helming in gales .. errrmmm does stormbound in Pierowall count?

Able to helm and trim without all hands on deck .... !! No seruiously I am a Ships Licenced Mariner and the RYA / Authorities in their haste to draft regs - left me out ..... so technically I need anyone with a bit of paper to keep the authorities happy in vast distant lands. (One day I'll do something about it - its actually a pain out here as they require all sorts for boat use .... so I have a Yacht Captain on retainer to meet my Estonian needs ....)

As long as there's a bit of paper on board - the other can be complete novice .......

My problem is I want to go sailing when all else are visting long lost relatives or working ...etc. So Solent jaunt is up and running for 10th Sept.

Baltic trip .... this is a dream I have had for a couple of years nmow and since getting the house out here wiith private pontoon / canal of the main river - I want to realise the dream.

I have a choice .... use my guys from out here- or offer trip of a lifetime to you lot of old salts .... so there you are ....

Game on !

I thought your Solent jaunt was this weekend otherwise I'd have put my hand up. Still, I'm planning on a week away the weekend starting 11th Sept. so no good me asking if you've got a space left there then :(

Your Baltic trip sounds real tempting but, to date, I'm still a wanna be yottie with just one very short sail under my belt. I tried the local sailing school to get on a competent crew course but all the weekend one's are booked through to October and I cannot spare a week away from work / family right now for a weekday course. So, without wishing to hijack your post, if anyone fancies taking out a complete newbie for a sail, pref. in the Medway area, it would be hugely appreciated.

That house in the Baltic sounds nice BTW, what's the cod fishing like up there?

Cod is small ....we would call it codling ....

House is costing a fortune to re-build at moment but when finished .....

So a newbie ..... why does that stop you coming ? I need 1 experienced with me to share watches and getting us there, 3rd hand is to assist and I'm sure after a few hours will be helming and conning her as good as any .....

Trips hoped to be early summer 2005 ..... so plenty time yet.

To repeat I need 1 experienced person, with a yacht ticket of some description ... ICC or more whatever .... cause my Deep Sea one dinno count !! Also we can take 1 novice who wants a trip of a lifetime !!

Nigel,

Which countries do you know in the Baltic who require those papers of sailors who are not citizens of those coutries? As for EU rules your home qualifications should suffice. So if you fly the red ensign and hold a UK passport, you will not need those papers.

Besides, along your planned route there is only one country who requires the ICC or the like and that's Germany (depending on engine hp. If you are only sailing you don't need anything. Don't know if disabling the enginge temporarily would work, though). Maybe Poland or the Baltic states do, but you could always cross from Sweden.

Either the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway or Sweden has any such requirements unless your boat is really big or you carry paying passengers.

As for the Baltic states and Poland, I would be interested in requirements and regulations there as I also have my own Baltic dream: I plan to "circumnavigate" the Baltic from Sweden, Finland, the Baltic states, Poland, Germany and back to Sweden. Probably single-handed. It's a long term project/dream of course, but sometimes I will do it!

Licences ......

I know that for my Estonian and Latvian Boats - it is a necessary item, but they are flagged for those countries.

I agree that the UK boat - which is the one I intend to trip with should not require such licences to be held by myself or crew - BUT I do not want any delays or misunderstandings while transiting any canals etc.

There is always the chance of one beaurocratic authority guy and bingo - sit and wait for clearance to proceed.

It may be a invalid requirement technically and its not impossible for me to apply for a Yacht Captains licence out here - so all in all I took the decision to look for one crew with docs, another without.
Myself having been on boats since I was 5yrs old .... I feel the licence is an addition to what I know, - please note that I believe that any course or licence training would add to my limited knowledge and most likely be beneficial. I certainly do not know all the answers and woe betide anyone who thinks they do !

If you are to undertake the Baltic excursion .... let me know - as I can assist in various locations around the former soviet independents ....... Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia.

I am still collecting names for the hat and the requirements for crew are very simple .....

able to listen my crap for 3 weeks and sail a boat, (as already said - 1 member can be on learning curve ..... ) but I would like 1 experienced member to back up my lowly self .....

So come on ..... there are a few so far and I'm not picky !! I get on with literally anyone .....

If you can survive a small boat with limited facilities etc. then drop a line ::

There is now the possibility for RETURN voyage ....... maybe ! Not on same boat though....... this is just in outline draft for present and will be more clear in new year ...

Hi Nigel. I just did a similar trip, ending in Riga.

Regarding the licence, it's very quick and easy to get an ICC certificate which covers any licensing questions, so you shouldn't have to rely on a crewmember having one. Mine took about three hours altogether, I was free by lunchtime, including both the practical and theory. No lessons are necessary, assuming a reasonable knowledge of things sailing, though spend a couple of hours the night before swatting up on the CEVNI regulations. Didn't cost much either.

No one has ever asked to see my certificate :((( Not even the Russians, who LOVE bits of paper
