but to be fair , apart from the age bracket there are other at risk groupings , like the obese , , smokers , drinkers etc ,, if it was just a case of shutting society down for the sake of our old folk then that could i am sure be acceptable , but when it comes to putting everyone else lifes in turmoil to save those whose chosen life styles have put themselves at risk then that is a different situation .

You seem to be out of touch with the realities, young people are catching & suffering, not the 80+.
 
It is easy to get help on the Crinan, in fact Scottish Canals publish a list of people like me who will do it, it is very slow doing it on your own particularly if you obey the rules and go back to close down each time you leave a lock, but the Cally is 60 miles with three major flights many miles apart,the practicality of assisting a boat through is a lot less. Strangely Scottish Canals regard the handling of boat lines by 'pilots' as no problem, but then they do not have any reponsibility for our welfare. On the long flights in the Cally small boats were normally either tied along side another or walked through by the crew, in fact the hire cruisers are directed to drag their boats from lock to lock so it would seem that they may be over reacting, but have you ever tried telling anybody that?

When I did it a few years back, we were asked to turn the engine off in the flights of locks and to warp Capricious through. As that was actually easier than motoring forward, that's what we did!
 
We just came through the canal last week. They've got a skeleton crew operating so it's not really possible to assist anyone. Should they have more staff? Tough one - the traffic is much lighter than we expected (previously transited in 2014) - so they'd be losing even more if they put on the full complement!
Once again the staff on the canal were really helpful and it was a generally very good experience - though opportunities ashore were somewhat restricted due to C-19.
I agree that it would be very likely that the singlehander would be able to get temporary crew at each set of locks - not sure whether that would really satisfy the guy at Corpach sufficiently to let him enter though...
