Cafetiere?

Expresso and cafetiere are entirely different flavours. You need to decide which you prefer. Filter is the other way similar to cafetiere. If money is not a big problem have you tried the plastic filter things they sell in supermarkets with coffee inside? Douwe Egberts if that is how its spelt are good. The Dutch had to find something to be good at, after the demise of the windmill and dyke, and they finally succeeded.

I agree that the Dutch are good at coffee, but neither the dyke nor the windmill are deceased. Windmills line the banks of most waterways in the Delta, albeit they are for power generation not pumping water (they have Archimedes Screws for that) and if it weren't for the dykes my house and office would both be under a couple of metres of water right now.

Back to the thread I bought one of these earlier this year for the boat - http://www.ethicalsuperstore.com/products/handpresso/handpresso-handheld-portable-espresso-machine/

Ludicrously expensive but fun to use and makes a very good single shot espresso - not so good for 3-4 cups, of course.

Funny enough we broke our glass one on the Riga bay trip - so rushed round shops next stop to replace. Managed to get a toughened glass break resistant job with plastic frame and handle ... actually much better than it's predecessor. It's so good in fact missus pinched it for house and handed me the house metal framed one ! One 'quiet night' ..... I'll get it back ! ;)

The post where they boil in a pan - that's actually traditional old way ... and is how most russians do it. Boil it hard and then pour to cups ... Let it settle a while for grounds to go to bottom. Personally I don't like the bits and presented a Cafetierre to missus mum !! She now uses it for all coffee she does !

If you like it stronger than cafetierre usually produces and also to make it easy for plunger to go down without having the "BLURP" happen when it splats out .... take a fork and stir vigorously before placing plunger / filter in ... gets water to ALL coffee then .... makes a big difference.

I am interested in the general support for cafetieres. I like my coffee evilly strong, but I find cafetiere coffee to be simultaneously weak, bitty and bitter. I find filtered coffee to be much smoother even when made very strong. I like percolated coffee a la l'escargot even more if made slowly, but it's a bit of a pain to use on a boat and doesn't make enough in 1 go. Am I doing something wrong with cafetieres or is it just a question of what you like ?

Next time in France, get yourself a supply of coffee bags! Just like tea bags, but proper coffee! Go easy on the milk though as it is easy to over do it. I do have a cafetiere on board though I have no idea who made it.
