Yes, I would always support the wire whatever the joint.
M'self, I crimp with cheap pliers and solder as well. The solder also helps if you are using standard, untinned wires.

I always tin the wires, then crimp the tinned ends together, finally then solder both ends and the crimp into one unit, the whole thing is bonded together. I also never join wires end to end, but lay them side by side and tape them together a couple of inches from the joint. The joint never takes any load, not quite as tidy but more secure.
