Cabin fans recommendation

Could you recommend some cabin fans? It's essential that they don't draw too much amps and are as quiet as possible.

"ecofans" - look them up on the net - a superb bit of complementary kit for my bengco heater in my 28' boat. Use no electricity at all!

depends how pretty you want them to be - some fans for PCs are rated at 12V and have a low consumption - have a look in Maplins for instance

We have Hella Turbo from force 4. Very good. Interestingly, they seem to cool the boat best by pointing them out of the companionway and thereby sucking fresh air into the forepeak - creating a flow through the boat.

Hella Turbo is regarded as the best low noise, low current draw, fan in the cruising community but the Caframo marine is almost as good for about half price.

Look at a computer parts co (in fact scavange from some dumped desktops) - computer cooling fans vary in size from 50mm to 180mm, and in current draw from 0.5w to 40w and they're all 12v.
Laptop ones, at the bottom of the scale, probably won't move enough air to make a difference.

Put them on a long stalk such as are fitted to navigation desk lights. I have them at all the bunk-heads.

The 140mm one I fitted, instead of the 80mm, to the ASU unit transformed its performance.

Our boat came fitted with Caframo fans. ( 10 years old now)
We have one noisy one (well after 10 years it has a right to complain) anyway that none has now been swopped with a good one from the V berth.
Will buy aother new one when I get around to it.

I bought the basic ones with a 2 speed switch on the back. Again purchased from Salty John of this Parish, but as Vyv says, he doesn't appear to list them. They really do take very little current

They are good fans but can no longer be considered "uncommon cruising kit", our slogan, nor are they particularly good value anymore. Hence we no longer offer them.
We introduced them here because we had them on our cruising boat in the USA/Caribbean and loved them. In fact we gave them the slogan "the ultimate cabin fan" which Caframo still uses.
I fear Caframo have become victims of their own success in UK. The price has crept up to silly levels (£60!) and they have introduced a middle man so we can no longer buy direct from the manufacturer and keep the price reasonable.

If you buy a Hella you will not be able to buy any spares if anything breaks.

Hella are expensive and good when they are working but they dont last very long as they don't have proper brushes in the motor....just bits of wire bearing on the commutator.

The 12v computer fans you get in maplins are great for putting above your bunk in the heat but not much good for shifting real volumes of air. If you decide on a camfrano or hella fan and are looking for 2 or 3 give me a pm with your requirements as I might have a contact that can help
