Hi
I've just bought a 1950 C&N pitch pine on oak cutter. The cockpit floor is
below the waterline and the stern sits very low in the water, possibly as
a result of several heavy items in the stern lockers, but also maybe
because she was designed that way (?). The cockpit drains into the main
bilge. Is this usual?. We were taking her to Corfu from Dubrovnik and
decided to turn back when a 3ft following sea on the stern quarter started
slopping over the cockpit coaming. We figured if the swell got worse she
would start taking on a considerable amount and the weedy 2.4 GPM bilge
pump wouldn't cope (manual pump was knackered also). She was taking
on water anyway due to several leaks.
Are these type of boats susceptible to pooping and would some sort of
washboards protecting the cockpit help?
She's a lovely boat and makes 6.5 - 7 knots under canvas, but there is
considerable weather helm on the tiller, even when she's motoring.
Could this be due to a missing middle bracket on the rudder or is this
usual?
She also heels over in moderate winds without canvas which is puzzling
given the long keel. She's had a new mast fitted - perhaps this is too long or
short/heavy or light?
Are these problems typical for this types of boat? I've only chartered GRP
boats in the past and this is all pretty new to me
