C-map and laptop

I interface my laptop to my GPS, and am running various plotter programs on it. Is it possible to get something like C-map on CD ROM and install it on the laptop without any other software?

just picked up your note on Google earth/harbours. Presently in the Baltic and trying raise Karlskrona Sweden on Google earth but cannot get sufficient res (already1024x768), any ideas.

The Australian software looks interesting, and I notice there's a French reseller. I shall have to talk to the C-map people at the Southampton Boat SHow.

Google Earth: some places have very poor resolution, and looking at Karlskrona, that seems to be one of them. The fault is at Google's end, I'm afraid.

Google Earth can be very useful if you're visiting somewhere you've never been before. No substitute for a chart, but if you haven't a pilot book, it's very handy.
 
You can download the SOB software from digiboat for free and it comes with sample C-Map charts to try out. There are several different PC software products that can display C-Map charts. Most can be downloaded for free trial periods. I have bought a Canadian product called SailCruiser - because its user interface is more like normal PC software.

I found the C-Map people very helpful when I went to purchase a licence to access the charts from their CD. (The CD is free and contains all the charts for a region, but you must pay to access the area you want).
 
What is the most popular map format, and is it legal to lend maps. I am looking to get plotter s/w running for my voyage from Essex to Dublin, and will want charts for South(English) coast, and Irish sea. Also, has anyone tried "SeaClear" software ?

Dont wish to sound rude, but not sure what you need to talk to the C-Map people for, and you dont need to use a French reseller. Just download it from the australian site, get a registry key, (or whatever they call it), and use it free for about 6 months. Any problems, just email the aussies and they'll get back to you, usually by the time you wake up the next day.

I think it's about 25 quid if you want to keep using it, (might be 50 quid, but it's bloody cheap whatever it is).

If they can produce a piece of plotter software for this kind of money, the rest of them are rip offs as far as I'm concerned....

I accept that people may prefer different interfaces, but that's all they are.
 
In registering for my 6 month "Software On Board" license, they give you the option to register with C-Map so they can send the CD to me with the charts on it.Then all I have to do is to unlock the charts by buying licenses from CMap online via the SOB software.

I think I will ask CMap for a CD direct, maybe speed them up a bit.

SeaClear is a good freeware chartplotter s/w.
It might be legal to lend maps but you'd be infinging copyright if you then made copies. You would need to check the Ts&Cs for the product concerned.
 
does it have to be C-MAP??

you can buy full UK and Ireland folio of Mapmedia raster charts on cd for £85 which comes with a neat little plotter app

Robin do you have a contact number for C-map please ? I need to update my NT card and can only find their dealers list, not them direct. Thanks
 
The problem with that list is that it isn't dated and it is far from complete ... it doesn't mention Imray for example ... with that glaringly obvious omision I have to assume that it is out of date and therefore not a huge help.

Imray??? My list is about navigation software, not maps. What is their nav software??? I even don't know one.

Both Imray & RYA/Admiralty produce charting for mainly UK(I think) - both were tested recently by the other Mag - S***** T**** -July 09, and came out as the best value for the price.
Imray was £ 29.95, updates online free, and the UKHO/RYA was £48.88, no updates, buy annually. The Imray was for 1 year ands had AIS function. Next year the Imray will be about £50 for two years with free online updates(I think).
