I guess it's a Lounge / Scuttlebutt distinction - us lot tend to stick with the same IDs for years ....not that this applies in your case! Seriously though, a friend of mine who sailed with Lawrie Smith posted a few thoughts here and on the Racing where he got firmly told off for not understanding ocean sailing I guess the forum wasn't for him....

......which returns us to the problem: too many peeps with serious knowledge leaving these virtual waters as they fill up with trolls and angry sorts

well I guess the issue is the same as elsewhere in life is that a little knowledge can be a dangerous in the hand of the would be alpha male on an internet forum;-) Certainly my experience is that the more I know the more I am aware of my ignorance and there's always something to learn , even if its just the location of the ignore button ;-)

Well, as well as opinion and knowledge, there is also experience, which is one of the things we can exchange. In many areas (most?), I don't have wide, expert knowledge, but I may have some real experience that someone might find useful. If you get a good range of these experiences in a response, you can guage the range of approaches to an issue.

Sometimes those with lots of knowledge can also get a bit, "my way is the ONLY way".

And, on a comment above, whenever you ask for advice on an anchor windlass, you ALWAYS get the, "just pull it up by hand" answer.

In the same way as when you ask for advice about an Eberspacher you will be told to junk it and buy Chinese, and any mention of bilge keels will elicit a comment about their inferiority in every respect to a fin keel. There are many similar examples and you quickly come to recognise them.

You have my sympathy. I recently joined, but am none too impressed so far. Too many opinions, not enough knowledge.

Well, it is a good thing then you didn't join any of the German forums. If you are ever looking for insult-dripping condescension or opinionated rubbish by "experts", it's truly the place to go. I read through the responses to a post by some poor sod who was fool enough to ask how he could improve the sailing ability of his motorsailer ...

Of course, if you prefer a more anglophone form of abuse, intellectual and otherwise, you may want to sign up for the more brand specific social media on FB. Here the resident and self acclaimed expert ( the one with very little practical sailing experience) will be happy to let you know when the yard that made your boat switched from using slotted screws to Philips, but will also pronounce a fatwa on you for (very gently) suggesting that there might be a problem with the design or just that it might be a fun idea to fly a spinnaker.

To be fair, I have found many on here whose opinions are valid and who I wouldn't even mind meeting in real life. I have, however, had also put a couple on "ignore", because it was just too painful.

And its the remaining forum members who lose out as those knowledgeable people get disrespected by the know all's and either leave of just stop posting their knowledge and experience.

The reason is that the know all's either cannot accept others know as much as they think they know of cannot accept an alternate solution to these. As posted above then think "my way is the ONLY way"

On the " Decent Toilet Seat Hinges " thread I posted some pics of how I fixed a Lavac lid hinge for a poster who requested more details. I was chastised to the condition of my Toilet. This makes me inclined to stop posting my solutions for general knowledge and answer the requester direct or not at all.

In the long run the forum will die and only be populated by the self congratulating faction

Come on Roger, it was just a bit of fun. The OP was asking about a "decent toilet" and your photo hardly fell into that category.
