Hello all.

New here so I hope that I have posted in the correct section.

I am looking to buy a yacht in Turkey in the future, but thought best to get some advice first on the technicalities regarding registration etc.

I am a British citizen, but currently living overseas.

Just searching YBW adds there appears to be a number of different options.

For example there are British flagged yachts, some tax paid some not, also Turkish and other flagged boats (french Italian etc) also some tax paid and some not.

As I understand the situation, Turkish regs allow a foreign flagged yacht to stay in country for 5 years (then pop off to Kos for a day and the clock starts again) Now, again I believe that if I have a UK tax paid boat then no limitations in how long it could stay in EU waters.
But how long could I stay in EU waters with a non tax paid boat? I have been told that it can be "In Transit" for up to 90 days.

As I have property in Turkey I have a Turkish Tax number so I can purchase and register a Turkish flagged yacht, but then the question about taking it to EU waters comes up again, I presume that it is 90 day rule again.

The main reason for these questions is due to the very close proximity of the Greek islands from where we have our property.

Any help appreciated.

I have not yet decided exactly what I will buy, still looking, but need to get the flagging/ tax questions answered before I waste time looking at the wrong yachts.

Many thanks in advance for you help.

Mike.

I am no expert but I have seen on here a number of people saying US boats can stay much longer than 90days. I think it is 12 months or more. I can't see any difference with a Turkish boat. A search on here for USA boats may help.

Thanks Allan,

I was in Turkey three weeks ago, I was sealing the deal on the property, not boat hunting at that time. I did notice a large number of USA flagged boats, most however were power not sail.

I also know that I could buy much cheaper in USA especially due to the current exchange rate, but shipping would kill the difference.

Non-Eu flagged private boats (non VAT paid) can enter and stay in Eu waters for up to 18mths then leave and return to start the clock running again. There is no stated minimum time the boat has to be out of the Eu but it would be prudent to spend a few days and get some paperwork to show the boat has left Eu or entered a non Eu country, I used to keep all port/marina receipts.
Take a look at www.noonsite.com. They have some well researched information directly from the EU on this subject.
