Buying a used motor yacht in Italy / Need some help for sales process

You will need to register it before you leave Spain as it will have been removed from the Spanish register (or whatever register it is currently on) before completion of the sale to you.
After buying our boat in The Netherlands, we had to schrap (delete) the Dutch registration, which was the responsibility of the seller and only he could do it as it is linked to his personal ID, however, he went off on a sailing holiday in Spain/Atlantic and forgot to do it, took a while to get in contact with him to get it done and then a 6 week wait for the Belgian registration to come through.

Dear Owners, Skippers and Motoryachtexperts: Thank you all for your valuable information and advice around the forum :)

My project is moving and by end of May I should be sailing with our new / old boat - a nice 46ft Azimut.

Flag will be San Marino and home marina north of Italy / Liguria. As a Swiss citizen this fits well for easy access to the port.

Open question is insurance:
- What insurance company / agent / broker can you recomend in the Med. / Italy / Europe ?
- Liability is by law in Italy 7.5 Mio EUR; do you recomend 10 or 15 Mio EUR ?
- What kasko - damage - fire etc. do you think makes sense ?
- Do I need a skipper or crew or guest insurance. I will sail with family, friends and (non commercial) guests ?

Compulsory insurance is likely to be for damage caused to other folks or their property. Easy to imagine a big claim where the boats cost millions and life-changing personal injuries may be involved.

As for insurance against your own loss, it’s a question of what worries you and what would your attitude be to the consequences of an insurable event.

Personally, I’m happy to spend money on covering my possessions against a wide range of risks so that I can replace them if the worst happens. Other folks have different approaches.

Hi Felice just logged in again after a lot of time... I know the AZ50 "from Portugal", that was a boat I already inspected, didn't like it either - lots of wrapping to hide scratches etc.
Marine group has a decent one for sale (owner bought a new one) bit on the pricey side.
AZ46 is a good choice if you are happy with 2 cabins layout, AZ50 three cabins I always found a bit stretched.
Liguria is perfect for CH, from TI is literally 4 hours.
Have fun and don't be worried about the budget CHF superstar for the next years.

Well - thank you ... my project is moving: We will have a seatrial with a CAT engineer this month but I am very positv about it. I have to do all the new registration, new flag and we hope to sail around June with direction to Barcelona - South coast of Spain - and to France - stay some time around Cap d'Agde and to Marseille - Nice and Cote d'Azure and finaly our new home marina in Italy.
I will have the whole summer on this great cruise and I will be happy to have some guests on the cruise.
We like the 2 cabin layout: for two people it is perfect and if I have 4 guests I will sleep in the skipper/crew bed at the stern. I will do a refit of the crew cabin to make it with some comfort for one week.
I look forward for a great summer and having a great time around the whole way to Ifaly.

Update of my Boat Project: need some reference on France / SoF, Boat Yard - Broker

My project in Spain had to be cancelled due to some real issues - next visit / project goes to France - Italy: Marseille, Nice, Cote d Azue.
Is there somebody of you that knows this broker / shipyard:

What do you need to know about them? What are you hoping / expecting this company to do for you?

I have never been a customer but know a few folks who have. They do a lot of day boat storage for billionaires' WA boats, and I saw a very nice Bertram refit that they managed a few years ago. I've generally heard good things about them.

This thread/your questions are strange. As said above, who cares about the broker? You might be over thinking this. I would bet a euro that you rejected the Azimut because it had faults discovered on survey: I'm afraid that's just how things are in the age/price range you're working in. You seem to be denying yourself a lot of boating and risking missing summer 2025, because of worries that the boat isn't perfect. Having a 20 yo boat checked by armies of surveyors is pretty much guaranteed to stop you buying it, if you will not accept any condition risk.

Good luck anyways! I very much hope you don't miss out on summer 2025!

Thank you ... for the good information about this shipyard / mechanic TMA.

It is quite simple: I search for an AZIMUT 46, version 2 cabins - and it seems they have one and perhaps they can also do some engine maintenance for the next years. And before I enter into some negotiations and fly for a visit to France, I try to find out who I am dealing with.

With the AZI 46 in Spain I did a visit and had finalized negotiations with the owner - on the boat. We did plan for a sea trial with an engineer to check the C9 WOT and record a professional engine survey. I canceld the sale (and the sea trial) due to some tax issues.

I have no problem to take some good risk, and we have a very clear understanding what we want now: AZI 46, 2 cabins, large galley ... Main criteria is the engines: serious maintenance, proper aftercooler, pipes, batteries, service history - and I have time to travel around and visit some other spots. If ok - I will fix the deal within 1 week - and another 3-4 weeks to change flag and place. Everything set up.

Darn, I lost a Euro, then.
While reading jfm post before yours, I thought I would have made exactly the same bet! :p
I am really sorry for you - One Euro lost ... .... I have no loss so far - and I learned many things about boat / yacht transactions in the south of Europe.

I have some issues with the kgarden admins around this forum: each post is waiting for some approval ... ? I dont understand. :(

If I can come in on this the OP is a friend of mine .
Afraid JFM and MapishM would have lost there euro , being over picky with surveys , condition etc isn’t the reason the Spanish deal fell through .

Although I can see how they did a 2+2 =5 reading parts of thread .

Let’s park it at “ tax issues “ post #113 .Leave it there for now .

No further enquiring now chaps .

It also comes down to have a bit of luck on top of the persistence - looking every day at new listings etc.

The AZ I bought was advertised on a Wednesday, I flew to the boat on Friday to meet the owner which proudly proceeded to show me his new 24mt boat and some bottle of wines later we had a pre-purchase agreement - he had already a new toy and the his old loved AZ55 was already history in his mind, there was no leasing to pay off, no wife screaming "you told me it would appreciate in value" and such.

He was willing to deal on the price, had no issues showing all new things he had made on the AZ, quick visit in the engine room revealed lots of mainteinance stickers dated 2024/2023, even the original cutlery of Azimut was there. We did a sea trial with Cat people on board to make sure engines where ok and that was it.

Still there where a lot of small things he did not properly (or someone did not properly, he surely paid for it), they are almost all done now, we had already 450 miles travel with it and no real issues. And for sure some new one will pop up. Such is the boat thing and not necessarily only pertinent to old boats, new ones break too.

100% agree, you need to jump when you’re slightly sure it’s right. Never let perfection get in the way of progres
