I do wonder, do people (and other people) actually look at all the stuff that is taken - or does it get filed into some dusty recess of the computer never to see the light of day?

Jonathan
I've taken bits of vid on my little Panasonic and posted it on YouTube and Vimeo. The trials club view it. I got an email just recently from the site administrator
your contribution with the website and videos has been very well received.

I'm thinking of buying a gopro this weekend ,
what are the benefits of buying the most expensive one compared to the cheaper one

How are you going to use it? Are you a video editting nut? Then get 3 GoPros so you can have all the video you want of your sport.

I have wanted a mast camera installation for ages. It would be great.

I get by with a compact DSLR type P7100. It is now 2 years old but its dong great.

there is a panasonic waterproof camera that I love

it fits in your pocket comfortably, spare batteries cost £8 each, it takes good stills but it does not have an eye peice - which I never use anyway because once it is attached to your eye on a moving boat means that you get wobbly shots

I made a page up about the cameras I use and a few hints on filming

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/cameras-and-steady-shots/

this is the latest version

I never leave home without mine - even when walking the dog

Dylan,

You have a video in which you wax poetic about the Sanyo Xacti.

The Sanyo has sound, is waterproof to 1.5m, and is relatively inexpensive. Do you still recommend it?

I had a Sanyo Xacti and tried it whilst swimming in the sea. It is definitely not waterproof. Very disappointed. I tried to dry it out but the electronics were hosed! I now have a gopro! Much better.

I'm about to buy a GoPro so I've been very interested in this thread. I have a Panasonic which I like, but you can't attach a remote microphone and I really want good sound quality on some instructional videos that we'll record. Has anyone used the GoPro with its microphone attachment?

mine is waterproof

several underwater sequences

Sanyo was bought by panasonic

they now make the camera

water proof to 3m

but go pros are deffo tougher

as for the audio

not sure you will find a waterproof camera with an audio socket

my medium size panasonic takes an audio mike -a lumix

you can also buy cheap radio mikes now

Thanks Dylan

I believe the GoPro has an optional external mike adaptor. I won't need to use a remote mike in conditions that need a waterproof camera, although splash-proof would be good.

I've been unable to find any camcorder with an external mike socket for under about £700.

Can you explain how the radio mikes work? I feel a bit dumb about these matters.

What I want to be able to do is film from, say, 3 - 5 metres away, possibly with wind or other people talking, but place a microphone where I'm pointing the camera at to catch what the people in the image are saying so that it's really clear and good quality.

Any advice gratefully received.

I think my mid format camera is about £800

the big one was 3K

the lumix gun mike is about £100

the Samson lapel mikes were about £250 a pop

wind is the enemy with audio and sailing

I fear that you will have to spend some money and
do a bit of studying

or hire a pro

you need a budget

I have a Pentax WG-2 adventure/ underwater camera which I bought after a recommendation on this forum. http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/pentax_optio_wg2_review/. Roughly half the price of a Gopro and twice as good!. The movie function is good underwater as well as above. I use mine mounted on my rollbar in my track car to record my on track performances. The sound quality is excellent. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0_GQhPdTnk

We have been using the earlier version, or I assume earlier - WG-1. Had it now for 18 months, Very versatile, close ups (less than 1cm). Done lots underwater, stills (publications seem to like the quality), it seems to be bullet proof and importantly, still waterproof.
