Now I absolutely love our little leccy outboard. Almost silent and does the job more than adequately with the tide or at slack but...having been caught out by the flood tide yesterday (well not really caught out coz I knew it was coming...my bad!) and ending up getting a tow back to The Jolly, I've decided to invest in a little recon 2 stroke 2hp o/b for Bob.
So...popped into Bursledon outboards at the Cabin boatyard and after the service and help I got there, I have to give them a mention on here coz they were great! Nothing was too much trouble for them at all.
Key for me was weight and ease of starting coz I'm a bit of a lightweight on that score tbh. The guy there (Steve) took me through every detail including how to run it down at the end of play so I could lay it down with no leaks. They even stuck it in a tub so I could start it.
Now I had no intention of buying an o/b there and then, just wanted to ask a bit of advice but after that level of friendly, helpful service...I went ahead and bought it. (haven't told Chris yet :o )
Very happy bunny and credit where credit's due.

Yamaha/Mariner ?

Got to be one of the best outboards ever invented, run for ever, self servicing easy and cheap, less than 10kg, quieter than a 4 stroke and no worries about how you store it. I had one that spent a winter upside down by accident, started 1st pull of the new season.

They also appear to be a better investment than gold at the moment, values of clean ones going up year on year.

Hmmm not much of any labelling left after the recon and paint job but from the orange/silver 2.0 label left on it, I would guess it's Mariner. It weighs 10 kg which is perfect for me. Not cheap but I think it's going to be invaluable for me at least.

Took it for it's first test run today. Oh so light to haul about and yaaaay I can start it easily. Takes a bit of getting used to as there's no neutral and the throttle isn't the twist handle type but a slider thing on the body and reversing means turning the whole body round and flipping the tiller arm (that should be a giggle :D ). Bringing it up to the pontoon or back of the boat is interesting coz without a neutral, it means you have to cut the engine and drift on or it just keeps on going lol. Makes it interesting :D.
I do have one question tho...are two strokes smokey? When I throttle up, it smokes quite a bit which makes me a bit nervous tbh. Is this normal or do I need to get them to check it over?

Smoke is normal with two strokes Lisa , but if it's still chuffing out a lot after a good run you could consider adjusting the fuel/oil mixture ,

lol yeh, bless 'em they even mixed it and filled the tank for me. Just looked up the serial number and this little beasty is 33 years old!!! I love it and if anyone's in need of a user manual for any old o/b they may have, I found this link on a previous thread: http://download.brunswick-marine.com/download/main;jsessionid=105vjo07c1lcd?type=corp.
Dead handy.

obviously don't know what you paid....but I doubt its that far away from what someone paid 33 years ago...!

I have no idea if this is a reasonable price or not but I paid £350 for it. I'm guessing it would have to be a competitive price or they'd never shift them. I didn't haggle but they gave me £25 off the ticket price.

Ouch, thats more than double what it was when new. But used ones are selling for £250-£300 on Ebay (Untried and no warranty). They really are going up in price and the couple we have in the family could well pay for my retirement at this rate :)

Thought about E-bay but tbh I didn't want to trust to luck and this way I could physically try it out. It came with 6 months parts and labour. If it goes on for another 33 years I'll be a happy bunny and hopefully a rich one at that rate ;)

Its the going rate Lisa and at least you have some come back if you have a problem.... IMHO its outrageous that these old outboards make so much, but they do

I found recently a new 2.5hp suzuki is just under £520 delivered, so I guess you saved £170, enough to buy a few bottles of wine!

Great Lisa, we love our little Tohatsu, they also go on eBay for more thn I paid for it 10 years ago! Great little investment.

Remember if a 2 stoke ain't smokin' it ain't runnin' !

For river pottering they are reasonably economical too but you will need to top it up occasionally, empty fuel tank is a bit like a flat battery, remember how that worked out for you!! Hahaha!

Thanks chaps. Glad I've paid the going rate at least and not paid over the odds. (watch out for me on antiques Roadshow tho!)
Oh and Mike?.....up yer bum!! lol ;)

Serious mode.

Did they tell you the oil/petrol ratio?

My Mariner is 100:1 but I'm sure that I had a similar Yamaha that was 50:1

Never understood why the difference but obviously if you put 50:1 in a 100:1 engine you will get a smokey engine and the plug may foul.

End of serious mode :)

I had one of these little 2 strokes before replacing for a DF2.3 which I love. Think I sold it for £150 so you've been well and truely ripped orf I'm afraid, go hang your head in shame :)
