A chap told me he was having trouble with neighbours stealing from his coal heap. He stabbed it all over with upturned beer bottles and spread chicken wire, attached to 240v. Next morning the trip was blown and the coal heap was all over the garden. This was a few years ago, now he would be sued of course.
For a boat, how about a reed switch on the entry to fire a siren and a floodlight up the mast? It would make the thief uncomfortable and visible. This could be a completely separate circuit so no fear of draining batteries while on standby: you would need a dipole switch so no residual current in the negatives throughout the boat.
Also, is there a simple way to use a webcam for security? That would only record the event, but might not discourage them like noise and illumination.
The ideas being bandied around are all well and good, except that everyone is talking about making their boats lethal weapons!
Imagine 2 scenarios:
A) Your laying at anchor when the chap in the boat next to you rows over to ask for sugar/ say hello/ invite you over for a drink?
He may not appreciate have 500volts coursing through him. (Even less so if he is the Harbour Master!)
B) And more serious, your boat is known to be booby trapped by people, you leave her at anchor for the afternoon to go ashore. The anchpr loses its grip on a newly lee shore.
Who in their right mind would risk themselves stopping her going on the rocks, if they thought they may end up in A+E for their efforts?!
Whilst living on a small boat for 2 years, we had to get aboard at least 3 boats to stop them drifting ashore, after their owners left them, once had to bring our spare anchor and line.
And yes, we often gave American flagged vessels a wide berth returning to our yacht, especially in the dark. Would only approach if they saw us coming from a way off, or we had been expressly invited to come alongside.
And spend all night waking up to the sound of other peoples' alarms going off. Its bad enough with all the 4x4s round our way waking us up every night.

Yerbut, car alarms are notoriously sensitive, jiggle switches ect., this is no more likely to go off than your nav lights to come on accidentally.
You need one of these http://www.secure-marine.com/ship/index.shtml but then you also need a very big generator and several tons of fuel to run it ....... works well on pirates though.
Last time I was in Durban Marina there was a cat on D walkon who had a sign saying "electric fence". I don't know it it was read but he might give you come comments.
Also a guy near me sels a 12v enginser using a car coil to produce high voltage for electric fences.
As for guns I will not have one as it make you a target but plenty cheep AK's in Mozambique.
Couple of intrusion zone halogens-aka spreader lights- linked to 2 pir motion sensors sweeping the side decks...lift the dinghy out,or half out every night cos it reduces the weeds and barnacle growth..a flexible steel cable instead of a rope painter....6x40mm s/steel bars and padlocks over the forehatch and vertically down the washboards...Sad to say that that was how I did it through Europe and the islands, the worst being the capital of Puerto Rico(real gunfire most evenings folks).Never had anything nicked at all,but then again there wasn't much worth nicking!
Not as fun as Tasers though.
In the spirit of Tomes 'gun' that he carries aboard, what about some sheets of cardboard taped to the deck with evostick (tacky adhesive) taped strategically in front of the companionway.
My favourite, observed: Painted in crude blood red lettering across a ratty outboard motor-''YOU TEEF I KILL!"
You don't need a good earth for an electric fence to work. I've been schocked wearing rubber boots on bone dry ground. I think the shock comes from your body charging up to the 50,000 volts of the fence rather than any current flow.
You may want to have pity on any liveabopards nearby though. The control boxes click quite loudly about once every 2 seconds. Very annoying at night.

My own system when I get my boat, will involve a rape alarm tied either across the hatch opening or the stancions, can't be seen at night

ran with this for a couple of years after a spate of break ins and thefts - ran the wire(strong nylon fishing line) across the inside oof the hatch. Never got tested............ /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif & /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif in equal measure.
Works best when someone is in the vicinity to investigate ie the is a reason for them to walk away.
Now have full blown silent alam system, along with 2 other boats, tied in to local security firm - pontoons are part of a big leisure complex. Within 3 weeks we had our first (and so far last) customer - he was caught in the boat nearest the access point to the pontoons and, after insistence from the boat owner, successfully prosecuted..............
Steel boat bludy big lock. Crappy tender parked next to someone elses rib.
On the bigger things (i used to be involved with shipping grot to W. Africa, and illegal immigrants back) we had a big 'ol ramp dropped on the quay, we set up two dogs on chains, and had a tiny spot on the ramp (not in the middle) where it was safe to walk. If you knew where the 'spot' was the chains brought the dogs up sharp a few inches from your vulnerables. It wasn't only the dogs that detered the thieves but the crew who would gather to watch and bet.
Tasar is good when it works, which is most of the time, but I have known instances when either one dart doesn't make good enough contact and it has very little effect. There are reports of it having no effect at all on some people but I wouldn't like to be on the receiving end.
Same thing with CS gas. It may be that the version we used was particularly weak but you could bet that the coppers spraying it were as likely to cop it as the baddies. Again, there have been instances or people getting more than one cannister in the face and just keeping going. Not a lot of use on dogs, either. Pepper spray is better.
For dogs you need a fire extinguisher, so at least if you can't freeze their lungs you've got something heavy to hit them with till they die or let go!
Guns can be a problem, as has already been mentioned. I met a chap who left South Africa after he found himself leaning out of his window blazing away with an uzi at a bloke who'd just stolen a one dollar patio chair for the 'nth' time. He figured it's not really a capital offence.
Personally, I don't like weapons. If they stop at range I'd have to be a reasonable shot and if they work close up then it would probably be taken off me.
