I've got two of those bulkhead compasses in the cockpit. The cover on one got progressively worse at falling off and now won't stay on at all; the other is doing similar now as well.
I can hold them on with a strip of duct tape but wonder if anyone has similar problem and found a solution.

I gave up n the original compass cover many years ago. The sun destroyed the cover quite quickly. I also know that sun destroys compass by boiling off the fluid. I made up a cover from old sail cloth. Screwed to the bulkhead under the compass at the bottom and attaching at the top and sides with velcro. Just pull the cover down to view. A bit ugly but works for me. ol'will

I keep promising myself that I‘ll make up a couple of new ones using thermoforming but I’ve found it hard to source white uv resistant plastic of correct thickness (1.5-2.0mm).
Anyone had any joy with this?

Self Adhesive Velcro ........ strategically placed tabs and away you go ... original cover ... no ugly DIY replacements.

My Contest 101 also is loose ... no reason it should be at all ... but it is ... I think half the reason may be temp related .. a slight thermal expansion / contraction and of it falls ...

Tony,
I had the same with my two Raymarine covers- one stayed put and the other would be blown off by the wind.

I put a thin smear of Bluetack on the inside of two diagonally opposed corners which did the trick (I think!) ; I also cut a thin strip of duct tape and affixed them top and bottom , inside of course, that worked too- I can’t remember in which order I experimented thus, so which was better I cannot now say- sorry, senior memory issues

I used some self adhesive foam strip, about 3mm thick around the inside when it got to be a loose fit; it's now a good push fit. It won't last forever but replacing the foam occasionally seems acceptable...

know this is an old thread, but it is time for me buy yet another cover for the Contest compass, it has started to break up with the UV degradation. Could a new one be painted with some sort of paint to preserve it, perhaps one of the plastic paints, how flexible are they as the cover is flexed as you clip it on and off, Are all the replacement ones the same, I am sure they are getting thinner and thinner, I am sure the original cover lasted much longer,

For plastic instrument covers that go hard and fall off - I used a hot glue gun to put little dots inside the cover - these can be trimmed for a snug fit!

I just glued a couple of 1" plastic strips inside the cover edge. I used a slice off some approx 6" plastic soil pipe. It tightens up the fit nicely. If you need it tighter just glue a couple more, effectively reducing the inner diameter. Any plastic will do.

Have done this on my NASA Marine wind speed and direction readout, the plastic cover never really fitted properly from new.
The Plastimo compass cover comes off in high winds from certain directions, but a quick squeeze of the cover usually makes it fit better for a while.

I simply coated the exterior of the crumbly cover with epoxy and then painted it with a white epoxy paint. It helps if this simply uses up some epoxy and paint, of which I always make too much, for a more serious application. Its now lasted 4 or 5 years. But catch it before it crumbles too much.
